Actually, it’s the Horse Guard’s Parade, as viewed from the Buckingham Palace side of St. James’s Park (the oldest Royal Park in London). The park itself is a haven for many species of birds (and of course, a great number of grey squirrels). Going for a walk at lunchtime around the lake, it’s hard to believe that you are only a few minutes’ stroll away from the Houses of Parliament and if you wave towards Buckingham Palace, Her Majesty might see you. The park’s history can be found on the Royal Parks site and more about the Horse Guards Parade, here is the British History Online entry (for those short on time, I recommend the shorter Wikipedia entry).
