One of the things I love about Athens is that, what for some is ancient history, for the Athenians is everyday life: I took this picture while waiting for the trolleybus!
The building is the modern Academy of Athens and was designed as part of an architectural “trilogy” in 1859 by the Danish architect Theophil Hansen, along with the University and the National Library. The gods in this picture are Athena and Apollo.
The picture won (25 August 2009) the Capital City with Matching Flag challenge and was Featured in the Capital Cities Of the World group and is so far (May 2010) my most viewed picture (over 1000 views) (and still my most viewed photo, with 1963 views at 16th August 2011).
