I created this mandala with the idea of drawing out 21 figure 8s/infinity symbols with all but 1 overlapping each other. With my asymmetry mandalas, I like to take a shape or line to create new shapes/lines.

In coloring this, I treated each overlap as a new shape regardless of which figure 8/infinity symbol it belonged. What’s interesting is that you can still make out the 8s/infinity symbols.

In 1999 on a trip to Egypt, I began drawing my first mandalas. Throughout the region, I saw amazing patterns on almost every site we visited. My analytical mind loved the geometry of the Islamic and Egyptian art. My heart & soul loved their beauty & symmetry. After I returned, I saw patterns in everything around me. I translate these into mandalas. In 2000 I added meditation to the process so that I could fully explore their metaphysical natures while guiding me on my own spiritual journey.

I often use eights in my work too! I love the way 8’s flow back and forth in rhythm together. I really like the light and shade of your colours it gives it a 3D effect, very nice!
  • thanks, mariejean. i put 21 8’s in this piece.
