This huge stag is in the process of shedding the thin layer of skin(velvet) covering his new antlers.
Like most other deer, red deer stags produce a new set of antlers every year until reaching a point of old age where the antlers decrease in size in tact with the deers potence and strength.
A stag such as the one on the shot will have antlers weighing around 10 kg’s and a body weight well over 200kg.
In the area in which I live, in Denmark, there are counted more than 1000 wild red deer within a 15 min. driving radius of my home.I often see herds of 15- 70 deer roaming in open fields and every now and then a few in the garden!!
Passers by see the distant deer and mistake them for cattle, infact one of the local farmers had more than 600 grazing on a winter field. It was such an impressive sight that it was televised by Danish TV.
