Foula
Calling anywhere ‘remote’ is only relative but, by most standards, the island of Foula (Bird Island) is indeed remote. It lies about 20 miles or so off the west coast of Shetland mainland but this may as well be 300 miles when the wind and sea rage. About 30 people live there and they seem to have a lively community by all accounts and the island itself is a true wildlife haven with birds, seals and wild flowers each vying for attention.
It is also home to the one of the highest cliffs in Britain – 1,200’ into the sea!
This photograph was taken from the mainland of Shetland and the land on the left of the horizon is also an island, Papa Stour (Big Island of the Priests/Fathers) and is considerably less remote but also full of interest – or so they say, for we still haven’t managed to get there on any of visits to Shetland!! Something to be rectified!!
Thanks for looking
Richard

This does look so remote, it is a wonderful and atmosheric image Richard, I like the distant rain clouds too.

Good of you Dave – it’s one of those shots that mean quite a lot to me – just because I like to know that Foula and its inhabitants are there (if that makes any sense).
