Visited the Hunter Museum in Chattanooga on Saturday, February 9. The two special exhibitions on display were Beauty Beyond Nature, The Glass Art of Paul Stankard and Exploring the Land, Landscapes from the Hunter Museum Collection. Shamefully, I can’t recall the artists names from the Exploring the Land exhibit but was impressed by a series of four works with the subject matter, tornadoes. Paul Stankard’s glass botanical works were an interesting blend of color and precision.
The works in the permanent collection were enjoyed more than the special exhibits. Works which held favor were a collection of African American works including a work by Kara Walker, newly acquired works by Thornton Dial and Chuck Close, and a mix of works by artists from Robert Henri to Rauschenberg.
