Route 66 and the El Don Motel, Albuquerque by

This is the front entrance of the El Don motel, which is a Route 66 survivor on Albuquerque’s Central Avenue, in New Mexico. This is one of the 12 neon signs across New Mexico that have been restored through federal grant money, in a project headed by Route 66 booster JohnnieV.

Wonderful color…great night capture…aren’t those neon signs just the best?

  • I do love neon, and am lucky to be on Route 66, which gives it a little more context. Thanks for your comment!

This is one of my favorite Neons. Takes me back to the last time I was in Albuquerque and makes me want to go to the Frontier for Huevos Rancheros right this minute. A welcome addition to the Neon Heaven Group.

  • Thanks so much, Sally! I didn’t quite make it to the Frontier for lunch today, but I did have a green chile veggie burger at Mannie’s, which is just up the street, at Central and Girard.

Great capture on the light and I love the openess and carefree abandon of this shot. Seems like the perfect place to just crash for the night before embarking on a journey into wherever. Somewhere to go just get lost

  • Thank you, Stuart! I think our city leaders have done a great job with the Route 66/Central Avenue revitalization project. We really are a great place for a getaway!
