Ambivalence
My beautiful wife, Hye, accompanies me on all photography trips. I’m a self-declared guerrilla photographer, so it’s a lot of getting in, taking the shot, getting out, on to the next locale. She isn’t into photography in the same way I am, so when we’re slogging through a Bisti mud field with five pounds of goop on each boot, it is a whole ‘nother experience for her. But she soldiers on, and I love and appreciate her all the more for it.
In this shot, she lets her ambivalence show. Taken as she prepared to ascend the wooden ladder of a kiva located at Pecos Historic National Park, Pecos Wilderness, New Mexico. Pentax K20D, 1/50 @ F5.6, 55mm, ISO 800.
I opened this as a RAW file in PSP3 and gave it a levels adjustment before saving it as a TIFF file. Then I opened it in PSP XII, copied a layer that I converted to B&W, then dialed the opacity down to 53% before flattening the image and copying again as another new layer. I coated that layer with the hot wax effect and brought the opacity down to 26 percent before flattening the image and saving it as a JPEG.
