The Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is a Resident Waterbird over much of the UK. Its ornate head plumes lead to it being hunted until almost exterminated in the 19th Century. It dives for its food, mainly fish, and to escape from predators. It has an elaborate courtship display, rising out of the water and shaking their heads.
Moore Nature Reserve is near Warrington, Cheshire and lies alongside the Manchester Ship Canal. It comprises five lakes fromed from former quarries. There are always fabulous birds to be seen from the various hides including Bittern.
