Utrecht Moat

the oude gracht (old canal) in the dutch city of utrecht. dug from the 11th century onward, it connected the drying arms of the river rhine (or what had been the main flow of the rhine untill the roman age) with the river vecht. in fact, many parts of it are actually parts of the pre-roman riverbed. the canal ensured that goods could be transported to and from the city, making it the biggest trade centre of the netherlands in the middle ages.

Yes. The word pretty does not seem adequate but comes to mind. I’m having a run through the pictures submitted to Dutch Touch, while I was away only two days or so and am struck by the variety produced, in such a small country.

when i got my masters degree, i had the incredible luxury to have somt free time and still the possesion of my students public transport pass and i also was pleasently surprised by just how much variation one can find in such a small country.
