Forgotten Guardian

the redoubt of fort vechten, one of the fortresses surrounding the city of utrecht in a double ring and part of the new dutch waterline; a line of innundations and over 60 forts and fortresses that runs north to south through the netherlands.

these fortifications have (due to the long period in which they were not used, while still remaining military objects that were inaccesable to the public) developed into some of the most valuable nature reserves in the netherlands. They are a refuge for a large number of (occasionally rare) plant species, as well as all sorts of animals (the underground buildings for instance, are an important hibernation site for several species of bats).

it is located almost on top of the site of an ancient roman fortress (a naval support base i believe) and the area around the fortress has been one of the richest sources of roman artifacts in the netherlands.

me too. it´s quite imressive actually. after the second world war, canadian forces found a large supply of experimental explosives left by the germans in a similar fortress, filled one of the bastions of the redoubt with it and lit the fuse. the fortress actually survived mostly unharmed. now immidiate action is needed because all the plantlife have no trouble at all with doing what tons of high explosives never managed and it´s pushing the fortresses apart brick by brick.

Yes. So much ” sfeer ” ! (Memories of learning about hunnebedden and Karel de Grote, at the Jan Ligthart (Primary) School, in Goua.) :)

  • theBFG replied

i know what you mean. the fortress is only 150 years or so old, but there is a feeling there of 2000 yars of history.

well you can REALLY see what nature does on the other side, where the roots are pushing the bomb-proof walls apart. luckely it´s being restored now.
