Beersel Castle
a classic view of the old castle in beersel, belgium. a round fortress with three towers and a living quarter built up against the inside of one of the walls (unfortunately that part of the structure is left in ruins). it was built in the late middle ages to defend the city of brussles from attack from the south. It’s regarded as one of the nicest examples of late medieval castle architecture one can find in belgium.

Amazing place. Back in the early 70`s, a classmate of mine at the International School in Boitsfort left Brussels and organized a going-away party at the Beersel castle. My band played that night in the courtyard. It was the most amazing event of my life playing in such a venue! They had a truckload of Stella, open-air buffet, and they actually made a bonfire in the courtyard. Those were the days when you could still do that kind of stuff… trouble was that we weren`t completely out of the place by the time the tourists came in the next morning. At least 10 party guests were still asleep in one of the 3 turrets, and 2 other guys were asleep on the steps. Total cost of rental, including insurance, was 50.000 BF. Quite a bit of dosh at the time, but worth every centime! Definitely a night to remember and your picture just brought it all back. Many thanks for the memory!

PS… I now live in Rhode St. Genese which is only a few km from Beersel.

Wonderful shot and light BFG (I don’t know what these letters stand for).I had a good laugh with Billyboys’ comment.Fortunately I didn’t fall asleep when I visited.Must not have been the same day!

wow that must have been a great night out! music, a beautifull castle and more stella than a man can hold.
my memories of the place are far less spectacular. A good friend of mine is good friends with an english rockband that played on the yearly blues festival on the castle grounds. Unfortunately there were a number of other festivals and such in the vicinity and there only were about 200 people attending. A rather sad crowd to play for. Ah well, they still got them dancing though and camping out in a nearby field was great too.

BFG stands for big friendly giant. It’s been my nickname for years now. i’m a bit on the tall side, especially compared to the belgians.
