Maastricht from the River
A view of the Dutch city of Maastricht from the Hoge Brug (lit. High Bridge), providing a nice overview of the city centre’s medieval city scape.
The stoney spires on the foreground in the left belong to the 11th century church of Our Lady. One of the oldest churches in the Netherlands and an important example of Romanesque architecture. It stands on the location of the 4th century Roman fortress that was later referred to as Mosa Trajectum (although the original Roman name remains unknown).
The bridge on the right is the Sint Servaasbridge. It is well known for being the oldest bridge in the Netherlands, it being claimed that it was built in the 13th century. This is untrue as the bridge has been repeatedly rebuilt, only being refaced with re-used medieval stones. The oldest bridge in the Netherlands is now thought to be the Stadhuisbridge in Utrecht. Still that does not mean that it’s not an impressive and beautifull structure.
