Thanks Nat. I got away lucky this time. Although a few did fly only a meter or so above my head but I guess I wasn’t disturbing them or making them nervous.
oh, cool – yay, especially during the breeding season :)) those B52 of the sea as we call them locally are so wonderful on the nest. We have a 181m rock, Noss, just east of Lerwick, we call “gannet city”! It’s got to be appreciated from seal level… Terrific views from this level :)).
Hi Nat. But I have to admit i wasn’t so lucky with gulls and pigeons. But maybe that’s why as I’m about to turn 50 I still have a full head of hair :)
This gannet colony is located at Cape St Mary’s, at the southwestern tip of Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula. Here are links to some of my other photos taken there: http://www.nfvirtual.com/nvag/201/newfoundland.html http://www.nfvirtual.com/nvag/204/newfoundland.html
Well first off I love the diagonal composition of the shot. Second great clarity on the foreground with the birds nesting/resting, and I love the misty portion with the bird soaring away. Excellent point of view, seems very high up, and overall a really pleasing image that conveys a sense of liberty.
Thank You Joanne for breaking down why you like this photograph it helps me appreciate and understand photography more. The birds are actually nesting on a cliff edge separate from where I am. It is a amazing felling having these birds flying over your head, they have a wing span up to 2 meters!
I can see why this has so many comments. It caught my eye straight away! Love it. The perspective is very cool.. not only the gannets but the one taking off in flight from the cliff. Great shot!!
Thanks Rosiczka! This is one of my older photos shot on 35mm about 15 years ago. Fortunately the bird sanctuary is in the same condition now as it was then.
Hi Rosiczka, It is amazing when these birds fly over you, they are so large. According to Wikipedia the northern gannet has a 165-180 cm (65-71 in) wingspan. But you better wear a hat!
Nice closeup shot. Good selective focusing with the background blurred. I’ve been there at Cape St. Mary’s about 8 years ago on my drive across Canada. Newfoundland was one of the most beautiful provinces.
Thanks for your comments. Yeah we sure have lots of photo opportunities on this side of the country. Haven’t yet but I would love to drive across Canada. I would think you would need at least a couple of months to be able to enjoy it!
Thank You Chuck i like the way you put that. Just today, I work down by our harbour, I was watching, indeed admiring, the seagulls catch the updrafts and just seemingly float. Gorgeous!
