Artist's Description

While in Cincinnati, Ohio for a EWRI conference, I walked a few blocks and across this bridge in order to capture a few photographs. This image consists of the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge and downtown Cincinnati.

The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge was constructed in 1866 and was the longest suspension bridge in the world spanning 1,057 feet. The construction began in 1856 with John Roebling, who later built the Brooklyn Bridge, designing his own positive displacement pumps in 48 hours to finish the foundation. The crew ran out of money in 1857 and the project was delayed. At the start of the civil war, there were concerns of a confederate attack in Cincinnati. A drawbridge was constructed so that Union troops could cross over into Kentucky. However, there was a clear need for a permanent bridge and money started pouring in to finish the project.

The tallest building in this image (behind the suspension bridge) is the Carew Tower (574 ft tall), which was constructed in 1931. The building in front of the Carew Tower is the PNC Tower (495 ft tall), which was was constructed in 1913 being the 5th tallest building in the world at the time. To the right of the image is the Scripps Center (468 ft tall), WIKI.
