These are in the mechanism at the Hooper Strait Lighthouse that kept tolling the fog bell. Before this machinery was introduced in the late 19th Century, the lighthouse keepers sometimes had to be awake for days on end tolling the bells manually — this was a true labor saver. The Hooper Strait Lighthouse is now relocated to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St Michaels, Maryland.
