Koi carp or more precise nishikigo, translated as brocaded carp is an ornamental variation of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are kept for decorative reasons in outdoor koi ponds and water gardens.
Koi variations are distinguished by the koi colouration, patterning, and scalation. The major colourations are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku variants.
