The Magnificent Stare

My new wolf friend seemed to like having his pictures taken – he stared “up close and personal” right into the lens.

I believe it is only fitting to donate the proceeds of the sale of this image to a park that more than 200 wolves call home! :)

I tend to disagree…You have captured this magnificent misunderstood animal! It is beautiful!!! I would love to have an injustice like this one..LOL Well done!

  • TerriRiver replied

Charlotte, you are too kind! :) But I’m serious, I can’t portray him “just right” with photos. :(

oooo this is so awesome…what a face…lucky you to get so close and personal with this beautiful wolf!!!

  • TerriRiver replied

Thank you! However I do not believe luck has much to do with it – I think HE decided to befriend me. :)

  • apjenkins

crumbs he must be tame . What a fantastic shot Bravo”!!

  • TerriRiver replied

    Thank you!
“Tame”, used as a verb by the fox in The Little Prince, is said to mean “to establish ties” (becoming friends). :) In this sense, and I believe here only in this sense, the wolf can be said to be “tame” – he decided to “tame” me at that moment. :)

Fantastic capture. wonderful wolf. You can certainly see the resemblance to man’s best friend in him!!

  • TerriRiver replied

    Thank you very much!
Yes, dogs are from wolves, aren’t they? :) In Grimm’s brothers collection of fairy tales, wolves were said to be “God’s dogs”. :)

You’ve received a lot of praise for this awesome photo, Terri, but no one seems to realize how incredibly rare it is for anyone to be able to even come close to getting the opportunity. I’ve been an outdoors person all my life, and living in west central BC (Canada) where wolves are not uncommon, I have only seen wolves about 10 times… usually for only a few seconds, and NEVER up close and calm. They are desperate about avoiding people. Whatever your “Wolf Whisperer” connection is, it is an unimaginable gift. I reserve my right to envy you :)

  • TerriRiver replied

Ted, you are very kind! However I believe the “object” of your envy is placed “wrongly”. :) It is the wolf, in this case, who decided to “tame” me so perhaps it has little to do with me, WAY WAY WAY more to do with the wolf. Envy him – and perhaps have a “serious talk” with him! Maybe he’d come around to “tame” you too! :)

Terri. You definitely have a special gift with animals. They sense something in you that does not frighten them. I have walked up to a deer in the canyon where I live and was so surprised when he or she did not run away. I think the animals look for you, rather than the other way around. What a precious gift!!

  • TerriRiver replied

Perhaps like my patients, they simply sense that I am open to be “tamed”? :)

  • TerriRiver replied

This one is completely wild. :) But I do have a high content Leben (see picture). And I know exactly how you feel. Are you going to get another one? Terri

  • SMOKEYDOGSOCKS

    SMOKEYDOGSOCKS

WHAT PICTURE? I DON’T SEE AN IMAGE OF LEBEN. I CURRENTLY HAVE A LOW CONTENT, SIBERIAN/TIMBER WOLF. CHEWY IS 75% SIBERIAN AND 25% TIMBER WOLF. I DON’T THINK I WILL BE ALIVE LONG ENOUGH TO GET ANOTHER HIGH CONTENT HYBRID. BUT, I WOULDN’T HAVE MISSED THE OPPORTUNITY TO RAISE THREE SUCH WONDERFULL ANIMALS. I ONLY WISH THAT MY LAST THREE WOULD HAVE MADE IT 15 YEARS EACH, LIKE MY NANNU DID. DEOGGE, WAS 13 YEARS 2 MONTHS AND 2 DAYS OLD WHEN I HAD TO PUT HER DOWN. SHE HAD A TUMOR ON HER SPLEEN AND IT BURST. SOCKS, DEOGEE’S MATE, MADE IT ONE DAY SHORT OF 12 1/2 YEARS EXACTLY, HE STARTED AN INTERNAL BLEED OUT, AFTER HITTING HIS CHEST ON THE EDGE OF THE DESK THAT HE LOVED LAYING ON TOP OF, ALL OF HIS LIFE. IF HE HAD USED THE RAMP, INSTEAD OF TRYING TO JUMP UP ON IT LIKE HE USED TO DO, HE MIGHT HAVE MADE IT A LITTLE LONGER, BUT IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME, BEFORE LIVER CANCER WOULD HAVE TAKEN HIM FROM ME. HE HAD TO BE INJECTED ALSO. THEN THERE WAS SMOKEY, MY BABY. HE WAS BORN UNDER MY BED, HE MEANT THE MOST TO ME AND HE WAS THE FIRST TO GO. THE PUPPIES, 3 OF THEM, WERE THE ONLY LIFE FORMS I’VE EVER HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH BRINGING THEN INTO THIS WORLD. I WAS HOPING FOR A GOOD LONG LIFE WITH HIM, BUT HE HAD TO BE PUT DOWN JUST 13 DAYS BEFORE HIS EIGHTH BIRTHDAY. HE HAD A TUMOR ON HIS HEART AND SPLEEN AND THE ONE ON HIS HEART BURST HIS AORTA AND HE STARTED BLEEDING INTO HIS HEART SACK. THE UC DAVIS HOSPITAL DIDN’T HAVE A CARDIOLIGY DEPARTMENT FOR SMALL ANIMALS, ONLY HORSES, OTHERWISE, THEY COULD HAVE SAVED HIS LIFE. I MISS ALL THREE OF THEM. AS FAR AS I KNOW, SMOKEY’S BROTHER, TACOMA IS STILL ALIVE AND JUST TURNED 13 ON JAN. 22 OF THIS YEAR. I DON’T KNOW ABOUT HIS YOUNGER SISTER, SASHA MARIE. BOB

Hi Terri, Here is a moment that will never ever dim for you; you will always be able to close your eyes and replay the meeting with this magnificent wolf. I’ve had them cross right in front of my stopped car in YS a few times, but NEVER this close, and never looking right into my soul like this one seems to be yours! Thank goodness you are a talented photographer!
