It is December on the Southern Gulf Islands. The days are short as the Mayne Queen slips passed the tankers in Navy Channel having just left Saturna Island and heading for Mayne Island. The deck is barely half full of vehicles. Not unusual this time of year. Our island communities are small and even smaller during the winter. I look at my watch from where I am perched on Henderson Hill in the soft light of an early winter sunset. I smile. She is going to be on time. As a full-time year round Mayne Island resident, this image says “home” for me.
