Those Things I should Have Done I Did Not Do (One Never Knows For Sure)
charcoal on paper
30×80cm
This drawing and the two following were inspired by a short story called ‘The Great Hug’ by Donald Barthelme. If you have a chance, I’d highly recommend tracking down some of his work!
This was the statement that went along with the three drawings:
The Great Hug. The climax. The moment upon which a life could turn.
Our lives are full of these spaces of time where we are embroiled in a wrestle with no one but ourselves. Our wants. Our desires. Temptation. Need. The Pin Lady tells the truth. The Balloon Man doesn’t exactly lie. The Great Hug will be frightening.
Intrigued by the opposing voices that lurk inside us all, Kim’s charcoal drawings portray an unnerving freefall conflict through space and reality in which the victor is as uncertain as the battle itself. The Balloon of Perhaps? My favourite Balloon.
