Taken near Paradise Lodge in Mt Rainier National Park, Washington (USA) on September 3, 2012
Mt Rainier is a dormant volcano
Decided to go for a drive yesterday to get away from it all….only to find a zillion people and at least half a zillion cars waiting for parking spaces!! We lucked out and found one after waiting about 20 minutes!! However, the wait was well worth it. It may be late summer, but on the mountain the alpine meadows are lush with wild flowers….lupine, asters, fireweed, scarlet paint brush just to name a few. The day was glorious. The sky was a brilliant blue and the air was warm at Paradise. However, it did became a bit crisp as we climbed up into the meadows. One of the glaciers was calving so quite a bit of very noisy avalanche activity up on the mountain. If you look to the left side of the mountain you will see the notch being created in the glacier by the calving just to the top right of the cloud rolling past. We were lucky enough to see 2 marmots and I was delighted with that, but to my delight, we also saw a black bear wandering the hillside! It was a good day!!!

Gorgeous, Teresa! And a lovely write up! I have to say, I’m envious. I have been up there a lot; very seldom was the mountain visible. As you know, it’s often cloaked in cloud-cover. Now I’m so far away from any mountains, it’s ridiculous. Very pretty here (northern Illinois) but once you live around the mountains you miss them forever. This is just exquisite! (There is talk, that it may not be so dormant… but we’ll hope it stays asleep!!!)

  • Thanks so very much Nadya! I intend to relocate after retirement, and being near mountains played a very big part in my decision making as far as where to move!! And yes….we are going to hope she sleeps for a very long time!!
