One of the bears at the Olympic Game Farm in Sequim, Washington(USA). He actually wants you to stay, as long as you have bread to throw him. He’s quite old and really a beggar.

Bears are amazing creatures! So big, so powerful and fiercely protective of their young. I had one encounter with one and 2 ft away… big one but did NOT like the flash of my camera! I was also (kick me lol! ) not oddly afraid of this bear too and it sensed that, and I think confused it so that it just just stood in front of me hissing.. then ran away.. Later I saw it looking into the glass doors, standing up like a huge teddy bear ears forward, in curiosity, as I was turning in to bed! a 6ft peeping Tom! lol! This is outstanding! xx

  • That is amazing, maxy! We have one that frequents our yard, but my husband has only spotted him once on the very edge of the yard. But he leaves his calling cards around the yard frequently. I really don’t want to get as close to the one around our yard as I was to this big fellow. I was really close to this guy, but like you, I didn’t really feel afraid. But like I said in the description, we have seen the attendants right in with these bear, so they apparently aren’t terribly aggressive, just very old and want you to keep feeding them bread!

Awesome close up!!! What happens when you run out of bread? This guy looks like a really big bear. I wish I could see him in person he looks so fasinating. outstanding capture!!!

  • Thanks so much Victoria. So far all I’ve ever seen them do when you run out of bread is just turn and wander off elsewhere. They have a huge enclosure, so they can very easily wander off quite a ways from people. And yes, he is REALLY BIG!

Don’t think I’d chance running out of bread :) Excellent details and capture!

  • Thanks so very much bicyclegirl. They really don’t seem to mind….just turn and wander off if you do.

Terrific image. You really caught a great image of a pensive animal. Please, I don’t mean this to be the least bit offensive but people actually throw bread to a captive bear? That’s so sad for the bear, reminding me of the old days at zoos where marshmallows were tossed to begging animals. I’m surprised this is allowed. Please do not take this as a personal attack for it’s not in any way meant to be that. I just take pity on a grand bear reduced to grubbing for tossed morsels of bread. It’s a sad state. You do fine work…this is a fitting tribute to a handsome old bear.

  • I understand your feelings Gina. I know the bears are really well fed and cared for (they are pretty old), so the bread is actually just a treat for them. I know they are there because of circumstances in their earlier lives, and the game farm is like a sanctuary for them (better than being euthanized), but still, so sad for them to have had a life that required this confinement in their later years.
Thank you for commenting, and I’m not the least bit offended. I actually quite agree with you, but I still love to go and see them whenever I can.
