Mount Rushmore National Memorial, South Dakota, USA
In the Black Hills of South Dakota, US, Mount Rushmore stands a s a monument to a nation – to its philosophy of government, its ideals and aspirations. The inspiration for this nation’s “Shrine of Democracy” was conceived by Doane Robinson, former South Dakota state historian. This great national memorial is also the result of the artistic creation of sculptor Gutzon Borglum. President Calvin Coolidge was so impressed by this project that he dedicated the beginning of the work which opened the way for federal support.
On July 3, 1991, President George Bush formally dedicated the memorial on its 50th anniversary.
