Artist's Description

This is a close up of a male pileated woodpecker searching for food within a freshly dug out hole. Taken in the rain at the Britannia Woods in Ottawa Ontario Canada. I had spotted 5 black crowned night herons in the distance and although there was a slight rain I drove from one end to the other to park near the trail entrance. As soon as I got out of my car I could hear the “sound”. I looked over and it was this pileated woodpecker. I used my Nikon d300 and 200-400 lens and used fill flash. I shot this bird for about 45 minutes during which time the slight rain turned to snow (it was early spring). Needless to say I never followed up on the night herons that evening.
