The shadows of the mountains were growing long across Highway 5 where it snaked past Mt. Shasta, California. Though I was bound for Washington, I grew weary and decided to stop for the night in the town of McCloud. This sleepy 1800s town nestles at the foot of the ancient volcano. At dawn, I was rewarded for my delay by the magnificent sight of the snowcapped mountain looming so close I could almost touch the glaciers.
