My mom’s car wouldn’t start.
I called AAA.
The repairmen arrived and asked me if I had heard the news?
“What news?” I asked
He said that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center in New York.
“What?” “You’re joking right?”
“No” he said, I just heard it on the radio, and he jumpstarted the car.
I ran back into the house while the car warmed up and turned on the news….
My mom was on the phone and came running when I screamed, we watched as the second plane hit,we held each other as we cried.

20 minutes of shock and I ran to my son’s school, 3 /12 blocks away, it took me just 3 minutes.
Out of breath, I approached the office; one look was all it took. They called his teacher and down the hall I went. I gathered him in my arms and cried.
Age 8 and wisdom beyond his years, he looked at me and said “Mom, what happened?” I quietly explained to him and then took him by the hand. At the office, while I waited for our neighbors’ son, another mother told me that she would tell her children that they were getting a special day off.
I looked at her like she was crazy. Why lie? Isn’t that what started this whole thing, I thought.

The news played constantly, Peter Jennings, Charlie Gibson & Diane Sawyer. Didn’t these people ever sleep? I watched my neighbors across the street stand outside that afternoon and laugh. From another country, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, I didn’t know.
But I watched them laugh and I was scared.
Were they part of this?
What could you find to laugh about on such a somber day?
I didn’t understand…..

I still don’t.

I watched as the planes hit, I saw the smoke, the fire, the devastation, the hell. I watched as people ran covered in dust, watched the people jump from the windows, watched as people held hands and prayed and I cried….

Everyone will have their memorials today, everyone will remember, because today is a day of remembrance.

But what do we do the other 364 days a year?

ALWAYS REMEMBER, NEVER FORGET…..9-11-01
May God Bless all of those we lost, the ones we did not and the ones who still protect us.

Everything you have described is etched in my memory, I don’t even have to look at a picture to see it. I guess it will always be there until Alzheimers or death erases it for me. I to sat and watch every thing.

I was worried today would drag all day, the news, all about today so many years ago…radio playing the national anthem from different artists..
    I wrote my memory…
they are all the same, yet so different…
I still get tight throat and chills when I think about it,,and I was so far away

  • T. Wall ~Throu... replied

I do too Kat, I think it’s that way for everyone.

My husband and I saw the Today show in the AM. I can’t remember if I took the kids to school or not! I think that I did. How terrible that you had to see people laughing. This whole thing has really made me distrust Muslims and they’re taking over the world. I’m glad I’ll be dead in 30 years!

  • T. Wall ~Throu... replied

You know Stephanie, that’s what is really sad. That because of 9/11 our distrust in people we don’t even know has gone so far, because of so few.

Thanks so much for writing this account of that day in history. Your tone & thoughts bring the memories back for all of us & even closer to HOME the way you wrote it. I’m dismayed that anyone could laugh at a moment like this that changed American History FOREVER. Let us pray & never forget that at times we must be tougher than we ever dreamed of & that rest assured God is with us ALWAYS. AMEN

How could we forget? I live so far away from you in Australia, my husband and I were visiting friends in New Zealand. They called us to the lounge that very early morning and we all stood in horror watching it unfold on the TV. At first Leon and I thought it was a movie but by the expression on our friends faces we realized we were watching something live. How terrible for you to see some people laughing, how can those sort of people expect us to take them to our heart even in our country. Our children were frantic trying to contact us in N.Z. it had touched them all in their own homes so much they had to make contact with us to make sure we were all right. That really made it clear to us that such a terrible act horrifies people with normal minds, fanatics and terrorists could never be welcome or accepted into our society. NOOO we will never forget and pray to God we will all overcome those who want to kill humans the way THEY they do with such cold blood.

How true Rita, how true. Suffice to say though, because of those few, it does not make them all bad. We still have to trust in God and believe in our neighbors, that there is still peace in their hearts.

I am so very touched by your writing. I too survived that experience, lost a dear friend, feared I had lost my son to the attack until days later, and heard laughter as well as cynical remarks of others regarding this tragedy. A day in life I shall never forget, it is embedded in my heart, soul and memory each and every day.
Thanks so much for sharing your story.
    Pamela

  • T. Wall ~Throu... replied

Oh God Pamela, I’m so sorry you had to go through all that. Was everything o.k. with him, was he hurt? I’m very sorry about your friend, it’s those kinds of reasons that make me sometimes wonder why God would let it happen, but the way I was raised, I was always told He has a reason for everything and ours is not to question why….
Thank you for sharing your story also. Isn’t it terrible that people laugh? I realize that sometimes it’s nervousness, but for the most part it’s not, and that’s what makes it so horrible….
    You’re in my prayers….

Thanks so much, no my son was not hurt, thankfully. I was like a maniac down there sorting and sifting through death searching for him, and a very good friend whom had already left the city that day, and the friend I lost. Then four years later I would loose my partner of 25 years on the same day only two minutes later than the time of the event! I now begin my vigil of tribute on the first of September, but it never leaves my heart throughout the year, to ease the pain of all of it.
Perhaps right now that is why I am unable to put my all into the photography end of my work…find myself doing more abstract compilations. I go with the flow most days.
Thanks again for sharing and your understanding, even if we never understand reactions of others. You are right, ours is not to question for we are not the one with the answers, no matter how deeply we search. This is exactly what the word “Blind Faith” means I believe.
    May you find peace always,
    Hugs, Pamela
