In 363 the Patriarch of Constantinople dedicated the Orthodox Patriarchal Cathedral. In 1453 it became a mosque until Turkey secularized it in 1931 as a museum for the people of Istanbul: The astonishing Hagia Sophia. The Turks revealed its ancient Christian symbols by painstakingly stripping away centuries-old layers of covering plaster. Again, a mid-eastern sun ignites this spiritual golden glow.
