I found a pebble on the beach today...

As a young child I had the realisation that nature could and would survive without the presence of man but not man without the presence of nature…

I found a pebble on the beach today
warn smooth and shiny by the constant movement of the ocean
dark and silky smooth to the touch
I turned it over and over in my hand
savouring the feel on my palm
wondering where it had been
where it came from

I saw a shell being tossed on the edge of the waves
rolling back and forth as the tide ebbed and flowed
how far had it travelled to get to this land
what little creature had been the architect of this piece
the spiralled shape and warm peachy colours
looked like a jewel of the sea

I found a leaf lying on the sand
floated here from farther afield
discarded by the tree when no longer needed
the colours now fading
but showing the beauty of its structure
long veins and arteries exposed by weather and time

As I wandered along with my treasures
of nature in my hand
I pondered on the question of whether
this world of ours would be better off
without the presence of man…
