Callie sat quite still, trying hard to focus on the task in hand. The tax return needed to be done. It had been sitting with the pile of other paper work for weeks – waiting to be dealt with. She was normally so on top of things… but this was before her addiction had taken over.

While she sat there, with the occasional twitch, she tried to think back to when, how it had started. When, when had it begun. Oh yes, that day in the park. Seemed so innocent then. She had been having a rough time of it at home and work. Hubby had been snappy about all the small things and the new women at work was such a bitch.

There in the park, whilst watching the kids soaring high on the swing, she had bumped into Suzie. The usual chit chat about kids, home, school were soon pushed aside as Callie spoke of her frustration and her disillusionment with what life had to offer. This is when Suzie told her of the opportunity for something different. A different way to see the world. It seemed so harmless, she could give it a try. Anything was better than the way she was feeling.

Suzie gave her details of how to get in touch and the right connections to make. It took her a couple of days to decide that she would try it. She waited until the kids were tucked up in bed and hubby was out for his usual Friday night with the guys. So here goes, she said to her self. I will give it one try and if its not for me, that will be that…

Oh, my god. It was incredible. An instant high. The colours, so vivid and bright. Swirling and flashing before her eyes. She could hear the radio on in the background, and words started to dance before her, it felt like they were screaming right into her, making a connection with every part of her – she had never seen such beauty – it seemed endless…

The first time seemed to last for ever. When she fell into bed the clock was just ticking over to 12.35am… oh god, how would she get up to the kids in the morning. She dragged herself from her bed and got on with the day. But the experience from the night before was ever present. She had to be prompted several times during the day to deal with the tasks in hand. Finally, it was the evening again. Kids in bed, hubby around at his mum’s to do some jobs… here goes, will give it another shot… This time is was even better. The hit went straight to where she wanted to be… the colours took over her world. She had never felt so alive and connected to her emotions. What had she been missing all this time. No wonder so many others were doing it… how could she ever stop. She never wanted to stop…

That was then. This was now. Tasks had begun to mount up. Children’s homework had been only half done; sports kit left dirty between sessions; meals grabbed from the freezer and microwaved to a crisp; hubby had started to notice and complain and pick fights. The kids seemed sullen and dejected. She hadn’t paid them any real attention for weeks.

This couldn’t go on. No, she could control this, it wasn’t go to control her.

Here she sat, with the occasional twitch. Staring at the paper work. A decision was made. She went to the computer to google addiction. She sat at the keyboard and started to type, then…

Ping… you have a Redbubble Mail popped up on her screen… oh my god its starting again!!!
