Wow! The sky must have been pitch black to see that many stars! Or did someone just hit me over the head with a bottle? Great shot!

  • tdub303 replied

Amazing! It is my understanding that this only works in certain parts of the world and you need a compass and a reasonable knowledge of stars to achieve it. Great job. Well Done!

  • tdub303 replied

Much easier than you think. Google ‘locate north star’ and you will get easy instructions on how to locate the north star. these shots can be done without the north star, too.

I want to do this, in fact, there is a location in Pennsylvania where no flights occur and the state park is geared for this kind of shooting. Did you worry about planes flying overhead? It’s a wonderful shot. How did you keep the shutter open that long?

  • tdub303 replied

I never thought of planes beforehand. Here is another shot that has planes, satellites and iridium flare all in one shot. I never realized how much junk is floating around in our skies…

I never kept it open that long though it would be possible with a cable release. I did use a cable release and the ‘continuous shooting’ mode to shoot 300 thirty second exposures. I then stacked those shots to get this image. Check the vid to see an animation of them getting stacked up.

Did you say “locate the north star”. I am not so sure we have the north star in the southern hemisphere. I guess I would be looking for direct south then. You must also need a place with minimal city light wash I guess.

And just out of interest, how did you go with battery power keeping your shutter open for 250 minutes? extra battery pack?

  • tdub303 replied

250 minutes was the life of 1 battery. I would have kept shooting if the battery had not died.

Wow, very impressive. I did one once with my Olympus C7070 and had to computer control the shutter release for 4 hours then layer in photoshop.

  • tdub303 replied

I am guessing yours is pointing at the celestial south. What focal point were you shooting at? This is 11mm.

  • David James

    David James

Yeah, celestial south. I don’t remember what I focussed on, it was about two years ago now. It was at the wide end of the C7070 lens which has a 27mm (35mm equivalent) focal length. Thanks for your reply :)

    Great shot

For those wondering the South celestial pole is 4 and a half lengths of the southern cross down from the southern cross :-)

this was my attempt at it here
