un-installation
This was done at an art gallery called Art Garden in Okayama, Japan. An installation that was technically never installed. Performance art that was witnessed by no one so was it even performed? One could argue that neither ever took place. Good thing I was able to capture the evidence of its non-existence with my camera….
I had an opportunity to use the gallery space for some photos. Given the setting I wanted to create something that looked like a physical installation. This “structure” was drawn by me and my cohort and recorded by my camera. It is completely made of light and nothing else. It was gone the instant it was created.
This image is straight from the camera. No photoshop was used nor any post editing of any kind was done. It was created using the light painting method. Numerous hand held flashes were strategically fired around the room to illuminate the space. A picture of the space during the day is visible here
Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 123
Aperture: f/7.1
Focal Length: 17 mm
ISO Speed: 100
This has to be one of my favorites art projects I have ever done…
I had an A4 size printed of this and it looks incredible.

way, way cool man. you’ve made a truly unique and awesome piece here. well nice.

Stunning how did you form the domes so precisely? It looks like they have followed some kind of form work. I could image this in an urban context in a really random location like a multi story car park…..Brilliant.

the challenge was making the lines on the back side of the dome visible. If you point a flashlight away from the camera it is no longer visible. I had to create some DIY device to attach to the light so one could see the drawings on the back side. I was also very surprised with the effect. I had imagined this but did not think it would come out so well.

I can’t believe that this was done in a single shoot!
Masterful work, tdub!
I presume that’s 123 seconds?

This is absolutely stunning mate – you have some amazing work but with the complete domes – 2 as well – this for me tops them all. I love the idea of the art space for something that doesn’t exist – nice to get a great space to be able to attempt this.

Amazing work tdub and it must of been quite a workout. All this light painting in 123 seconds!

It was me and Phill. The other half of fiz-iks. We each did a dome and then ran around lighting the room with hand held flashes which was a challenge in itself to get even lighting over such a large space with such high ceilings…

Absolutely georgous! The lighting on the walls is so uniform it looks like it’s painted blue and illuminated with white instead of the other way round. The light blues at the back are a beautiful shade. The igloos are spectacular!
This truely is a work of art. Congratulations!
