I woke up this morning and my back felt broken
as I slid out of my bed. My hand naturally reached for my pills
it has taken me a half an hour just to get that far
the ringing in my ears never stops
and the blood stains on my pillow are common place now

I pull my boots on and button my shirt
dust off my stetson and adjust my collar
grab my gloves and lariat and head out the door

The crowds are gathering at the state fair grounds
the trucks are bringing tonight’s main attractions
2000 pounds of pure muscle with an attitude

I meet in the Cowboy’s lounge and draw my ticket
El Diablo… this bull tried to break my back last year
I hope he has forgotten me, I haven’t him for sure

as I climb over the gate to tie off
my old friend seems like he’s real mad tonight
the cowboys help me pull my ropes tight

they ask me if I am ready to ride
I dig my spurs in and take a deep breath
and with a rebel yell I say, " Let it Go!!"

The gate shoots open and the crowd roars
it’s now just 2000 pounds of bull and me
hopefully we will dance together for at least 8 seconds

El Diablo jukes left and dips to the right
I was expecting that and dug my spurs into him deep
he jumped high and spun. I wasn’t ready for that

he dipped one more time and I swear I broke a rib
my hand is slipping. and he is spinning real fast
he dipped again and almost unseated me

God, I feel like I have been on this for an hour
I can’t hang on much longer.
I think I just broke another rib

I see the cowboys coming over
just a little more and I am home free
just a little more now. hang in there cowboy

there goes the bell!, 8 seconds …
I made it. let me jump off this beast
Yehaw!, I have beat this beast intent on killing me

The clowns pick me up
and say good ride cowboy, good ride
as I am running for the gate

it was a tough go tonight
I made my 8 seconds
but another cowboy beat me on points

there will be no gold buckle tonight
but there’s always tomorrow
and my poor body will attempt this madness all over again

I load up my truck with all my tack
and gather my thoughts for the drive
and settle my bones for an overnight drive

In the morning I will be in Wyoming
and I will do it all over again
just to win that gold belt buckle
