Tasmanian Waratah - Telopea truncata
One of the most beautiful of all species endemic to Tasmania, the waratah blooms around early spring. These majestic flowers can be found all over the state, but especially throughout the west coast region.
We have a nearby township named after these magnificent blooms, appropriately called “Waratah”. Any person visiting Tasmania during the flowering season would find the roadsides around this town alive with wild waratah blooms flowering on shrubs up to around 20 feet high.
I love these flowers, and I love taking photo’s of them. This one was shot in a garden at our local hospital. Once the vignetting filter was added, I managed to even impress myself with the way this shot turned out.

G’day Anna,
My heartiest congratulations on this striking avatar winner. We will all be seeing fireworks like this on New Year’s Eve.
You have a wonderfully clear image of this lovely Aussie native as a basis for the great dramatic processing you have applied.
The square format is the only way to go I feel and the slight angle across the face of the flower shows a very good eye for composition.

TaGiRoCkS
whoa this is awesome as!!!
how’d you get it on the black background?
TassieAnna replied
Thanks, the black background was achieved by using a photoshop plugin called filters unlimited and the vignette filter provided, though it could also have equally have been achieved through a spotlight lighting effect in standard photoshop effects filters. There was also a bit of desaturation of the green background to finish it off

Stunning pic! Although, are you sure it’s the Tassie Waratah?? Telopea truncata typically has a small flower head with only few sparse stamens. If this plant was in a garden it’s most likely to be the showy NSW Waratah, Telopea speciosissima which has quite a large, dense flowering head.
TassieAnna replied
The identity of this plant as telopea truncata is beyond doubt.
TassieAnna replied
will add to that the flower grows wild all over the west coast in a much larger flower head than can be found in the midlands or east coast varieties. There is absolutely no way this is the nSW variety (which I am also very familiar with)

Stunning image! Congratulations!
I’d love to know what a vignetting filter is!

Stunning image! Congratulations!
I’d love to know what a vignetting filter is!
TassieAnna replied
Thank you for the comment. A vignetting filter simply darkens the image from the corners towards the centre. Depending on the settings, anything in its path will be blacked out. Final background removal was achieved through adjusting contrast and brightness.
chirose2
Thanks for that. I’ll have to try it!

What a great flower and capture! The vignette and post are perfect. At first I thought this was some wild PS skill till I read the info! lol
TassieAnna replied 22 days ago
Thank you bicyclegirl. I was quite surprised the way it worked with exceptionally little post processing.
