Water in three forms

Water in three forms

At Lake Myrtle, at the base of Mt Rogoona in Tasmania, on a cold morning a heavy layer of frost sits on an old log in the water, the mist in the air giving this scene an extra element.

Taken with a Nikon D200 camera.

Beauty! Can I offer an idea, just to see, if you haven’t already done it?
Crop the shoreline away and I see an almost totally abstracted and for me, more powerful image…....

  • tasadam replied

Stuart, thank you for your suggestion. I have not been ignoring it all this time, occasionally thinking about it. To each his own, I have viewed it as you suggested a number of times but still find myself preferring my original composition.
When I took it, I spent some time composing – getting my position right to achieve this look. An element to the image that the shoreline assists in are the two horizontal lines. Not jumping at you like lines of a Rubik’s Cube – the top line pronounced, is the shoreline, and the bottom line, much less defined, more ragged, is the line separating the sunshine reflection. Cut away by the log, I had myself in the position and had the timing just right to allow a hint of the sunshine reflection on the left side. This line, very much sublime, and blending into the composition by being carried through the log – the main feature of the image. Many other elements to complete this image – the mystique of the mist, the vertical lines of the reflections, and particularly the sharpness and clarity of this image in full size.
Thank you for the suggestion all the same.
