January 16, 2012 Thank you!!!
Tamyka offered to be one of my models for my “portrait project” – photographing people in natural light to help me learn and to show each person their own unique beauty. This was not the image I used for the project – but one that she really loved. Now that I’ve started to learn more about portrait photography I am envious of those with a portrait lens for the ability to have a greater f stop range. Does anyone have a favorite lens? I’d love advice.

The Nikkor 50mm/f1,4 is great and quite cheap…and you can shoot in the dark without flash…the best of two worlds… :)
Thanks Michel…I was looking at that last night and wondered if it was good because it was inexpensive…. I appreciate the help. :)

I wanted to tell you….I bought the 50mm and LOVE it!!! I’m so glad you all encouraged me to do so. I’ve only taken a few images with it so far…but it’s ability to shoot in low light is blowing me away – and the 1.4 is a whole new world to me. I’m using it this Saturday to shoot a bunch of indoor, low light portraits and can’t wait to see how well it works. Thanks for the advice. :)))

excellent focus. What is use for portraits is the 50mm but what I love is the 85mm 1.2 . It slims out people’s face so they love it more too. Plus that wide open f stop is so dreamy. One day I will own that lens, right now I rent it whenever I can. :) Keep on clicking my friend. I cannot wait to see your project when complete
Where do you rent a lens from? I had no idea you could do that. Let me guess…the 85mm is like $2k or something close? Thank you for the info and advice….I hope one day to get to shoot some with you. :)

This is just beautiful what a stunning portrait. Love the soft B&W and how the eye shadow sparkles.
I have been discussing lens with another friend on here and she sent me a link about 50mm will send you. I have just got a 50mm 1.8 G not tried it out yet
OK – thanks Karen. What are you going to use yours for? Portrait as well? I’ll be interested to know how you like it since we both have the same camera….

google rental lenses for your area. I rent from a local camera shop but I know there are some national chains of rentals…… Borrowlens.com, lensrental.com.. most will ask for a deposit from your cc, and then you get the deposit removed once you return the lens. I also rent when I travel to have a wider selection of lenses to use, more diversity. Also helps to decide which lens to buy. .. for street/portrait, best for your money will be the cheaper 50mm. but if you havent used a prime lens before, rent it first.. good luck again T
thank you ♥

Nicely done Tania. The concealed eye provides mystery and I love how the camera has picked up the glitter.
Thank you Carl.

Can understand why Tamyka loved this portrait, Tania :-)))
Concur with the good advice from Farfarm and Angela KJ :-)
I use the 50mm almost exclusively – it does have it’s limitations BUT what I love most about it is it’s huge f-stop range and reknown ability in low-light – it thrives on naturally lit situations. From experience as a former telezoom user, the 50mm does take some getting used to (Angela’s advice to rent/try before you buy is sound!) as you’ll need to learn to literally move your feet into your subject, instead of relying on your zoom to bring it to you. The effort is worth it though, the 50mm has taught me a lot about finding the best composition and light … looking fwd to reading about your rental lens-trials, Tania :-)))
Thank you so much for all that feedback – I’m feeling encouraged and supported – and … excited to try the 50mm out. I love the idea of it working well in low light and like the challenge of learning something new. I really appreciate your words. :)))))
