Heroes
Each year, dozens of immigrants die in waters of the Strait of Gibraltar trying to reach the Spanish coast.
From the Viewpoint of the Strait in Algeciras (Andalusia), Europe and Africa are looking face to face. Just 14 kilometres away by sea between the two continents, separating them. The proximity means that thousands of men, women and children risk their lives in pursuit of a dream. Escaping poverty in order to give their families a better future. Because of water currents, strong Levante wind (able to reach 100km/h) and the precariousness of their boats just a few succeed.
Those who survive are called ‘paperless’ by the media.
I’ll call them heroes.

As a journalist I have covered many boats of immigrants and my heart has always shrunk when I’ve seen men, women and children step on a foreign land being terrified…
