A woman of distinction
by Maree Cardinale

I am once again thrilled to be approved to do a Digital Translation In the SOLO Portraiture Workshop….
Original work entitled ‘A woman of distinction’
by Maree Cardinale
How exciting!!
Special Thanx to you my dear Maree!!….

In my initial piece, my aim was to make a vintage vignette of an elderly woman looking back through her life and remeniscing. Much to my suprise…When I started (part way into the work) to play further with filters and such, I found there were several faces staring back at me with each filter change, almost as if I was going through part of her aging process….

….how shocked I was all of a sudden instead of thinking of her remeniscing…
I began to see her as filling up with radiant light from within…in hopes of her passing into another realm of life!

you can see here, where my thought process goes, with a garden background adding streaming beams of light, she almost seems as if she is at that stage of passing into another realm (lifestage, passing, death). She is beginning to be transported to a ‘heavenly garden’ full of light and love. There is now a softening to her face and it is lit with blue sky and garden for her earthly hair!

Now I do not expect that anyone sees this as I do…or even believe in afterlife…but this is how by just playing around with filters her face changed and then….my idea of remeniscence and memories changed into a stark reality at meeting death and then a joy and almost looking forward to the next stage.

In religious experience transcendence is a state of being that has overcome the limitations of physical existence and by some definitions has also become independent of it. This is typically manifested in prayer, séance, meditation, psychedelics and paranormal “visions”.

I knew I wanted to be an artist at age 4 (Full story: Click on full portfolio, Click on my name)

Very fascinating work; it is really neat how through your experimentation, you uncover and rediscovered things; and how your process became a part of your final image. I love your interpretation of the light shining as she is closer to entering heaven.

I have to admit though, my first impression when I saw this was entirely different – it made me think of Gaia – the eternal earth mother, hence her age. But of course many interpretations can be made – just like the meaning of life and the creation of the world itself. Lovely work.

  • Oh MY!!….what a great comment AND compliment my dear!!

…you have completely captured the essence of what is was for me to do this work!!….In dong it, I became a part of it and my own fear of aging became exposed…but through working it….I initially found a peace and resting of my fear!!

AND of course….how wonderful to see her as GAIA…I have added her to the group even before you mentioned it and so you see your interpretation is spot on!!

Thank you Mui-Ling for your kindness in sharing!!….;-D

Great translation Tammera – there is a real radiance showing through now that wasn’t quite so evident in the original!

  • Yes this is so true….things that could not be seen in the original became evident through my working it in filters and brightness/contrast….and the beauty of it is….I became involved in the work through my own fears of aging, when one of the filters showed the stark reality of age instead of the original soft approach I was taking….but how wonderful to be transported also in the working of this piece using different backgrounds and such….to a calming of my fear with continued working and realization of the next stage!

This is quite beautiful. Even in my first glance I noticed how hopeful and radiating confidence in a beautiful future that awaits her. You certainly turned her from a woman who has accepted(with grace and dignity) that her life nears an end to a woman that feels that plenty of good still awaits her. Great!

  • Thank you so kindly hon for your wonderful comment and compliment!!…;-D
