GLORIFICATION OF CHILD SOLDIERS 1 by

War is such a tragic thing, and made even so more tragic when children are involved. Childhood should be a time for doodling and daydreams NOT war.

Pomnik Małego Powstańca / The Little Insurgent
65th Anniversary of the Uprising
Monument to the children on the Warsaw Uprising . It was placed outside the walls of the Old Town in the 1980’s. It’s inspired by the story of 13 year old Corporal Antek, who died fighting in the uprising on August 8, 1944.

The Warsaw Uprising was an attempt by the Polish Home Army to liberate the capital from enemy hands, before the Soviet advance. The goal was to reinstate a sovereign Polish government before the Soviets could liberate it and instate their own government. The Uprising started on August 1, 1944 at 5PM and was only supposed to last a few days, coinciding with the Soviet advance. However, the Soviets stopped short and remained passive while the poorly armed Polish insurgents fought block by block, building by building and in the sewers. The Uprising lasted for 63 days, until it was finally put down on October 3, 1944. Around 16,000 Home Army soldiers were killed and 200,000 civilians. In retaliation, Hitler ordered Warsaw destroyed, and 85% of the city was razed to the ground.
