If I were a train....

If I were a train would my life be very different? Not at all – I’d still be trying to get off these tracks, trying to break loose from the same journey the older engines took before me; trying to stoke up enough energy for the endless route ahead.
The route would still be fraught with risks and hazards, and I would be expected to be tough and strong enough to withstand them all.
People would look and see the thick coats of paint, hear the strength of the engine and think “oh there’s a train that will keep going for ever – that one’s not going to crack up under the strain of meeting timetables and schedules, of carrying everyone no matter how heavy their load”.
I don’t think so – they’re just not looking closely enough and haven’t seen the deep insive cracks that threaten this train’s ability to reach the end of the line safely.

If I were a train....

Written nearly eight years ago when I started to understand the cost of maintaining a mask and a suit of armour. I’m much lighter now!
