The photo was an HDR of 8 photos. I combined the photos in photoshop, processed them in Photomatix and then did further edits in photoshop. ie add noise, sepia effect and highlighted the colours on the other side of the entrance

hanks again Lois. You are too kind to me :-)
It is an amazing property. Don`t quote me but I think this was part of the servants quarters. This part of the estate was subdivided and they turned it into a small cul-de-sac with new houses. I liked it much better before the addition of the new houses

Great shot. I like all the editing that you did on this. The selective coloring and sepia effect really work well. Nice work!

I spent my childhood here, Calvin Rand is my uncle and this estate has been in his family since before the Civil War. He was one of the founders of The Shaw Festival and still vists Niagara at the ripe age of 80. Shaw Festival. How lucky for you to live there and thanks again for the gorgeous memories!

I have never had the pleasure of going inside the grounds to see the estates but it is an amazing building as seen from the road. Rumour has it that it is going to be turned into an Inn. If so, I will definitely go take a look. Speaking of the Shaw Festival. It is the Shaw Festival that put Niagara-on-the-Lake on the map. I guess your uncle is a big part of the success of the town
here are some photos of the Estate

Wow! What a great shot. This brings back some excellent memories for me. My grandfather was the groundskeeper on the estate for Mr. Calvin Rand and his family from the 1960s to the 80s and I spent many of my childhood days visiting my grandparents on the estate as they lived in a house on the back part of the estate. The entire estate was a playground for myself and my brother and sisters! And boy what a playground! Stables, a pool, tennis court and those great big lions (which use to be at the BACK of the house when I was a kid). We use to sit on them and “ride” them all the time! This entrance was actually not as handsome looking as in this pic at that time. More overgrown with bushes etc but the entire estate was a very magical place.Trish Romance has purchased the old Rand Mansion at the front of the property and intends to turn it into an Inn. This came straight from her own mouth on my last trip to Randwood. I will be adding this lovely portrait to my collection of momentos I have gathered over the years! The place has changed hugely since my childhood but it is STILL a very magical place and you have captured some of that magic in this piece. THANK YOU!

thanks Cherbear
I live in NOTL and that has always been my favorite house. I was sad to see them turn that part into a subdivision. My favorite building was the house at the entrance I photographed. What was this house? It’s not the huge (main) mansion that faces John Street. I remember when it was all run down and then they restored it. I just loved the turret on that house.
You must know Susan who responded above.
As for Trisha Romance. I can’t wait to see what she does to the mansion. She has a few houses in NOTL and they are all amazing. I am sure this will be an amazing Inn
thanks for stopping by
ps I have never been on the grounds on the main house but it does look impressive from the street

The old house at the very back us to belong to The Sheets Family. They were, I believe, cousins to the Rands. That old house was always in need of repair. I do recall that the Rands did bury some of their old horses back in that corner of the estate. I remember seeing some stones back there during one of my adventures on the estate. I do not recall meeting Susan. I did get to meet Mr. Rands 5 daughters and the youngest, Elizabeth, was actually the same age and me so we did do some playing on the property together. There was, if I recall, a younger girl named Wendy I believe whose family lived in the house at the very back that you are speaking off. It has been some 35 years since then so I am stretching to recall the details. I also just read that they have taken down the lovely greenhouse that stood in front of the old corral at the middle of the estate. My grandfathers house was right beside the greenhouse and I remember going into the greenhouse with him often to take out plants etc for putting around the estate. It has changed HUGELY since I was last there and I also look forward to seeing what Trish does with the property. I hope she does it justice as it has been somewhat “abused” in my opinion over the years. Not getting the respect it deserved as a lovely old property.

thanks for the history lesson. I will have to take a look at the estate on google earth to see where everything is.

This is all too funny – all these connections. We used to call this place ‘The House with the Sunken Gardens’ because of some romantic adventure my sister read as a kid.
