HM Bark Endeavour.
This shot’s a bit special to me, it was taken with a digital compact camera. It was a last minute decision to go and watch HM Bark Endeavour leave Whitby, I wasn’t expecting much.
The night was special, hundreds of people lined the harbour, Endeavour give a salute with it’s canons as the crowds cheered. The sun was sinking, but put a warm glow over the whole affair. I took some photos as she sailed out and then dashed to the end of the harbour. There was too many people, so I climbed on to a rubbish bin to get a last few shots, the people framed it beautifully…. At the time I hadn’t realised that this may be Endeavour’s last visit.. will it return home…

this is awesome… be nice if you could get rid of the people….. maybe you can use “flood” plug-in

It has a beautiful painting quality to it. I reckon that the people do frame it well, adds to the atmos of the event.

Had a look at your sequence of the Endeavour and realise that you must be a really Tall Guy. You have managed to catch the vessel leaving the port from the west cliff, numerous shots along the pier and then also the west cliff quite a feat by any means.
Apart from that some are quite stunning images.

Hi Colin,
my initial photo’s were taken from the jetty near the bandstand… from there I took shots of the Endeavour coming from the bridge until it passed me… I then dashed to the end of the pier ( not the outward section as that was roped off ) and climbed on to the back sea wall, where I captured the scene you see above. Then it was up to the top of West Cliff for the into the sunset shots, it was in view for a long time :-)
Thanks Alan.

Hello Alan, You did well to get through all the crowd, one things for sure it was more than I could have managed. It is a scenario that was duplicated many times but it is a shame that the boat will not be back.

A stunning image, the sky is fantastic and I agree that the people frame it beautifully, gives it a sentimental atmosphere, one for the faves

A perfect night for departure, although sad it is fitting that the replica will never return to Whitby just as the original failed to do. An excellent photograph especially as all you used was a compact. You are right, the people frame the shot well, the Endevour centre stage with a wonderful backdrop and flotilla in tow, a picture that has everything :-)

Thanks Damien,
it was a special night and I’m sure even if the Endeavour did journey back to Whitby, they would be very lucky to get such wonderful light… :-)
