Ramsdale Mill, Sutcliffe Style.
Ramsdale Mill near Whitby. I came across a book of photo’s by Frank Sutcliffe, a famous photographer, who took photo’s around Whitby in the the mid to late 1800’s.
By coincidence one the photo’s was of Ramsdale Mill, a place I photographed early this year… I’ve already posted a portrait style colour photo, but I thought I would try to process an image similar to his. Unfortunately the book is copyrighted, so I can’t post the original, which looks similar to this, except for a fallen tree in the foreground, and the building is cropped at the top.
I did try to find the photo on the web, but with no success. .
Taken in the North York Moors National Park.

TallGuy replied
Hi Dougie,
we came across it while looking for the waterfall that is further upstream… if you still want to know where it is let me know, although the bank is extremely steep getting down to the beck.

Hi Alan,
Great b/w shot. Plenty of atmosphere! Sutcliffe could teach some of today’s photographers how to take and process an image. I have 3 of his books and a couple of his photos on the wall.
cheers Neil
TallGuy replied
I have to agree Neil, he was certainly skillful, especially with the equipment he had to use.
Also of interest is his shots of the people, how they dressed and looked… I tend to avoid having people in my shots, I tend to think they only spoil the shot. On saying that, I guess someone looking at our street scenes in a hundred plus years time would also be very interested. I often think of trying to capture villages, but there is so many parked cars, no interest to us now, but in the future a possible amusment to others. :-)
