Recently I had the pleasure of meeting up with extraordinary artist, musician & fellow bubbler DilettantO in Western Australia. It was rather intriguing photographing someone while they played beautiful toe tapping music! A truly memorable afternoon.
The instrument was designed and made by a wonderful guy in Finland called Olavi Linden, and is based on the same principle as a Strohviol, except that the horn his uses is not made of aluminium or brass, but kevlar. As well as being both a luthier and violinist, he is also an award winning industrial designer for Fiskars. There is no name for the instrument but DilettantO likes to call his a ‘Lindenstroh’ and the maker hasn’t complained about that!
The one DilettantO has is the one he (Olavi) originally made for himself, so he feels very honoured to own it.
It is tuned in standard fiddle tuning which is GDAE
Olavi has also designed and made violas and cellos using this design principle and a quartet exists in Finland that plays his instruments exclusively.
Thank you as always for looking :)
