Striated Heron

Striated Heron

Thank to all who helped name this Heron.

Captured on the banks of the Daintree River, far north Queensland.

Someone ought to tell the mad photographer hanging off the boat there are crocs in the river in these parts ~¿ô

Kind thanks to Robert Elliott renowned wildlife photographer & fellow bubbler who suggested I take in a cruise of the river on my trip!

I would say that it is definitely a heron of some sort but it doesn’t really matter because this is an excellent photo that you have timed to perfection. Hugs

  • Tainia Finlay replied

Many thanks Peter, I was told at the time but was too busy keeping my balance and getting a shot to take notice! Hugs, Tai x

type night heron in the red bubble search bar, and you will find 7 pages of assorted night herons xxx

  • Tainia Finlay replied

Hello dear dougles I have it on very good authority is is a striated Heron …

There are many species of Night Herons in the world, but the only one in Oz is the Nankeen Night Heron, sometimes called the Rufous Night Heron. This bird is a very rich cinnamon-rufous colour with a dull green patch in front of its eyes.
The Striated Heron is a generally grey colour with yellow lores (the bit between the eye and the bill) and yellow lower bill. It only has orange legs during breeding season

So now we all learn something .. I knew it was a bird anyway ~ embarrassed GULP ~ European Herons differ to Aussie ones :D Oh and by the way mine dosent have orange legs so not the breeding season LOL!

Thanks for your input dear dougles xx
