Huntsman spider is a common name given to the family Sparassidae (formerly Heteropodidae). They are also known as the giant crab spiders, due to their appearance. Huntsman spiders can generally be identified by their legs, which, rather than being jointed vertically relative to the body, are twisted such that the legs extend forward in a crab-like fashion. Larger specimens of these spiders are also sometimes referred to as wood spiders, due to their preference for inhabiting woody places (forest, mine shafts, woodpiles). They are known as rain spiders in southern Africa.

These eight-eyed spiders are found in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, Florida, and Hawaii, and possibly in many other tropical and semi-tropical regions.

Many Huntsman spiders are dull shades of brown or grey. Their legs are covered with fairly prominent spines, but the rest of their bodies appear smooth. They are frequently found in sheds, garages and other infrequently-disturbed places. The Banded Huntsman (Holconia) is larger and grey to brown with striped bands on its legs. The Badge Huntsman (Neosparassus) is larger still, and brown and hairy. Its bite will inflict the worst injury, and local swelling and pain may cause nausea, headache, vomiting and heart palpitations. The tropical or Brown Huntsman (Heteropoda) is also large and hairy, with mottled brown, white and black markings. The eyesight of these spiders is not nearly as good as that of the Salticidae (jumping spiders). Nevertheless, their vision is quite sufficient to detect approaching humans or other large animals from some distance.

Hey Taiche, it looks like a huntsman. They’re very common in Australia and they also live in other parts of the world. This one’s a young one. I normally kill every spider I find inside the house, but whenever I get a huntsman, I put them outside in the garden. They’re not deadly!

Oh, I’m not suggesting YOU catch this and put it outside, but … you just place a glass jar over the top of it, then slip a sheet of paper in between the jar and the wall to act as a lid and then carry the spider outside. Or, you can keep it in the jar for a while to check out its 8 eyes and 8 legs. A lot of people keep these as pets. Other people kill them immediately. Others just scream in fear. My wife’s one of the latter, haha!

I am one of the later – they are prolific here in Turkey and moreso through summer. they make web nests through winter for themselves and for hiding the babies when they are breeding. ı try to brush away all the cobwebs from the sheds but I never venture under the roof tiles…...I hope I get to capture one of the white varieties we get out here …...their bodies are like thin shells and they are too big for comfort! I work on the basic knowledge that all spiders bite ..that snippet of info is to much for me to handle!
