I’m broadening my skills by learning to paint with a more impressionistic style. I’m struggling with it at the moment and feel like an obsessive compulsive lol but I WILL integrate this style into more of my work.

I am currently studying the works of Van Gogh (my first great impressionist love!) and Paul Cezanne. Both have styles that speak to my heart so deeply and profoundly, their work is so fluid and SPIRTUAL!!! Sigh…..swoon….lol.

Also, I have to share with you the words of my inspirational Priest Fr Richard when I shared with him my first attempts at impressionistic landscapes, to which I stated that it was a break from my more serious religious art:

Fr Richard: “Thanks for sharing your latest paintings – landscapes in an impressionist style is probably my favourite genre. I have a special thing for Cezanne! Your paintings are a great first attempt – I am sure even Monet would have been happy with them in his early days?! And any art that expresses something of God’s beauty and wonder is surely serious art? Don’t stray into a false dichotomy of spiritual and secular – all of life is meant to be spiritual!”

He is such an inspiration! Not only is he my gift as my spiritual director but we have a great love in music and art with the same tastes! I have been so blessed! And he was RIGHT! I was SEPARATING my religious work from all of God’s beauty in creation. THAT was my MISTAKE and was the reason I was blocked in my ability to paint landscapes. I’ve been set free! hehehehe

My Art Mentor was trying to tell me the same thing but now I get it!

This is very, very beautiful Tanja. I think you just hit the jackpot with your impressionist style. I really love it.

  • Tahnja replied

I eally hope do Vasile and thank you so much! I’ve got a lot to learn but I think I can make this work and the feeling I get when painting in this style is so freeing! I never thought I would feel like that! I am always so stressed when painting faces in realism that I get so edgy but in this style, I felt so relaxed!

    Thank you so much!

Dearest Maddy, Master impressionist! I am so honoured and touched by your wonderful compliment. Thank you for encouraging me as I journey forward, expressing the beauty that is in God’s creation from my heart and soul that has always loved impressionism and how this style expresses art with so much heart and soul!

Wow Tahnja, looks like you’ve started something new. I can see the Van Gogh inspiration here, but still maintains the lovely quality of light and colour evident in your work.

  • Tahnja replied

Mui-Ling you are so wonderful! I have sat and studied both Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne with an almost childlike wonder and awe. What a great feeling that has been for me! Then to be finally able to express something of their style in my art for the first time has been a great gift to my soul.

Thank you with all my heart for appreciating my new work and study

  • Tahnja replied

Hugs…from such a great landscaper I am so honoured! Yes indeed, my Priest is a very wise, loving and special man. His words allowed me to finally realise what my mental block was concerning landscapes and it’s made all the difference. I am always so stressed when I paint realism in portraits and such and I’m always edgy because I have to focus so hard on getting so right. With this style I was so relaxed! I felt so free and able to express colour and light and shadow in such a spiritual and flowing way that I felt so good!

Thank you my friend! I’m actually EXCITED about landscapes now! lol
