I had given a painting to my sister years ago ..but she wasn’t keen on it..so I repainted it all.. adding things in fact adding nearly everything you see here.. and then turning the women into mermaids..I’m so pleased that it worked out this well.

My work ethic is not too good either dan..but because I was sort of given a theme or a suggestion to try these mermaids..I think It got me moving again ..I was stuck and bored and not painting much .along came betty and said try some mermaids..so I did..
so don’t worry ..there can be such long lulls in my painting around here..
but once I’m into something that I feel is going to work out well..then I’ll work at it day and night ..like a mad woman…hha!!

so don’t whip yourself..I am the same as you ..hha!!

Ahhhh…..now that I got that out of my system!! LOL!
I got your email saying you had a new painting up. But true to form you misspelled ‘mermaid’ so badly that I wasn’t sure what I was going to see! LOL The second I saw mermaids I jumped to the comment thread and all of your emails to be sure you got the message that I wanted to buy it! All of my life I’ve been ‘followed’ by mermaids. Mermaids and angels all around me. Even when I tried to excise them from my life, when my home started to look like an underwater Catholic pulpit, they would just reappear! So I give in to the mystic ways of the water and air nymphs and learn to recognize those ones which are knocking on my door. Corny eh?? But it translates into a sale for Lady C!!
The painting itself is like a treasure trove. I actually don’t want to look too closely, I want to be surprised, discover it’s gifts when it comes home. I’ve told you before Cathy that when I unfurl one of your paintings for the first time I can feel the energy coming off the canvas, I actually get chills and become very happy…it’s like the ultimate drug!! You leave a part of yourself on the canvas and when I unroll it I can feel that part, it’s quite magical. But with this painting I can actually feel this magic through the computer screen! This must be a very special one!! You are a wonder Cathy Walker!

strange how they work sometimes isn’t it..and though I didn’t plan any of this..I just went with the flow and started painting….and it seemed to tell me with a very quiet voice.. where the bits and peices needed to be..I love it when it all goes so well.. and to top of the feel good moment..it just got sold..whooooe!! I’m over the moon …

and bty.. I haven’t forgotton about your angel dear tahnja..It’s brewing and stewing as a red bubbler puts it so well..hha!!

that’s good that you noticed that ..because although I have never really studied other artists work.. and I was never schooled ..I’m self taught..
though I glimpse a lot.. and have looked at the greats in art books and have my favourites ..
I have always really loved and been in awe of the ancient religious manuscripts ..you know the illuminated ones- the pages and books that the monks used to do ,...they would paint away ..probably in the drakness of their monasteries..it would have been gruelling work for them..I imagine.. I so love what they did
so maybe..just maybe there is a slight influence here..because I love that work so much ..not that I’ve seen all much of it.

though they did such fine work and mine is rather coarse in comparison ..I’m sure the old monks wouldn’t
whip me for this one..hha!!!! they might be rather pleased ..

This one is very cool. I have been wanting for many years to do a mermaid piece and at least one fairy piece, but I haven’t been able to draw a mermaid I’ve been satisfied with. My policy is that if I can’t draw it I probably shouldn’t try to paint it…mostly from past experience and horrible results! I love your technique, which kind of reminds me of illuminated texts like they used to do in Medieval books and documents.

hha!! fabulous..and that’s strange because a few people have said a similar thing ..I must say that after seeing a few docos and looking in a few books that show those wonderful Illuminated manuscripts..I kind of fell in love with them..and I admired the monks who often did those..living their lives painting in tose darkened rooms..what dedication they had and it must have been painful work at times….so thanks..that’s a real compliment..

much appreciated!!..and you’re right ..I don’t think mermaids are as easy to paint as they look..I had some trouble trying to get them to look like mermaids.. those tails are a strange thing to have to paint on a female.. quite right that it’s hard to get them looking the way you want them to look..hha!!

I need one (mermaid) to model for me but haven’t been able to locate one yet. I did have a decsendant of a fairy princess model for a couple of fairy paintings (still in photo stage), and I’ve had great fortune in drawing a convincing fairy on several occasions. BTW, don’t believe those people who illustrate them with “butterfly” wings…it ain’t true!! The true wings are more like those of the dragonfly. Just thought you’d like to know. :)

fantastic les..and good to hear all of this..yes some people do know more about the fairy life than others..I tried to paint a few in the past.. but none were good enough to show anyone..I just know that you can paint them superbly…and strange..but I beleive you about the dragon fly wings..In fact dragon flies seem to be cropping up everywhere for me lately..and I watch the signs.. as I do think that synchronicity is an important part of our lives..a pointer to inteeresting things that happen..

and hhha!! yes mermaid models are hard to find…hheee!!!!
as I din’t find any that day ..I had to call them up from the cosmic soup..and they didn’t want to sit for very long either..

Thanks vlad..and you’re right .that painting you like ( the lady drowning) was when I was going through some pretty heavy stuff in my life ..some emotional turmoil .. and it’s a bit painful to even look at that painting these days..thank god I came through it and didn’t die as I was going under those turbulent waters…hhha!!!!

that painting was on some extremely thick canvas ..and I didn’t even prime it ..
so not only was I feeling a lot of pain at the time..I must have been angry with everything ..including my art materials…hhha!!!!

It was sort of like- “stuff it ”..”paint it” or throw the brushes and get off the easel..hhha!!!

and I don’t even have an easel..hhhhha!!!!!!!

it was a strange time..but I’m glad that you liked that one anyway..

so you like deep dark and emotional art ..that’s interesting..I prefer light and happy art these days..I don’t want to see sadness or anything nasty hanging on my walls..maybe because I live with enough sadness anyway

you caught me-yes i am life you?at 52 i had a thing called panic disorder- so i suffered a bit till i found out what i had and then fought it with information on how to deal with it yes i am a passionate soul and love being that way it can be over? pricy at time- like i just ended a pove afair who a wondeful pollyanna who made me crazy and act like a teenager but i ened it for her sake- yes i love totally i had a great wife who died and she was my life and life saver too so now i am back to just me in my life i had been ill- but seem to be geting beter-now i will dedicate my life to art no more silly teenager for me-solife is good-love is fine if? you havethe right one who nurtures you and you do it back amen-~~art is my elixer-haha not spelling have a fine day there be good to you-walt oh thanks for saying i look ok for an ole fart hugz~~-

I wish the very best for you ..keep on keeping on and painting..you are a very good artist my friend..and yes life can be cruel and painful sometimes..so difficult.. and sad at certain parts in life.
make sure you get some rest ..some quiet times ..so you can regenerate..
and get back some energy..I can see that like me..you use up a lot of energy when you paint..it can be exhausting to be creative I know.. !!!!
also …I am a carer for my son who has a disability..and life has been so difficult for the past 13 years..he is a genius with music and guitar and song writing ..but has other mind problems.. you know what they say about a fine line between genius and madness..so true I think ..
it’s getting better though ..better and better ..and so I hope it gets that way for you too.

Just getting back to this site after a long day. I hope you get a chance to use that dragonfly imagery somehow. This is probably the time of year for it in your corner of the globe. When I was living in California I had ponds in the backyard and there were tons of them of many different types buzzing around, especially toward the end of summer.

So true of the mermaids not wanting to be out of water for long. They don’t do well that way because of the drying of the scales you know. Plus they are a feisty bunch…not all that sociable and maybe a bit snooty by some accounts. But all of that comes from centuries of mistrust no doubt.

Probably enough on that for now…So, take care and have a great day down under!

Sorry if I carry on a bit…but mermaids, fairies and harems are such interesting subjects and so worthy of serious study. I hope you don’t mind using your pages in this way, in the public forum, but maybe some others will be encouraged to join in and thus increase the visits to your site and the views of your art. And at least you have the comfort that you have created some thought-provoking artwork! (It’s not my fault that my thoughts run a bit silly…I was born that way!)

Oh yes, and I meant to add that, having known a direct fairy descendant (I believe I mentioned that before) I was able to absorb a wealth of knowledge on both fairies and mermaids…though not so much about harems…from her. Enough in fact to write two small books, one on each subject, and volumes more if I ever get the time, from ancient tales that the fairies hand down through successive generations. I hope to publish these some day, complete with illustrations so that the world can stop wondering about all of this.

And on the subject of wings, it should be noted that the dragonfly-type wing is quite strong indeed, and therefore perfectly suited to the fairy (except perhaps those that are a little too fond of their nectar and thus would need something more stout to heft their plump figures aloft). As a rule, fairies are very lithe in nature…’dainty’ as we would say. And they have the further benefit that the wings are inflated by the veins that course through them, so that when they are not in flight they do not constantly protrude from the body, but instead shrink to a more supple and manageable size and lay comfortably tucked beneath the shoulderblades and along the curve of the back becoming almost unnoticeable. Most people don’t know that, so now you have some inside information.

I remember doing a mermaid painting in guache, it was nice and then I painted in the whites of the eyes with orange, and she came to life, it was a bit scarey for a while, so I know what you mean when you feel like you actually created something.

and yes a book is always at the back of my mind .it’s a great idea..but I sure wouldn’t know where to start with that ..and then I’d probably start and then never finish ..hhhha!!!!
I wish I could write as well as paint..but I’m not that talented ..
I’ll have to look out for someone to collaborate with ..one of these days..

I was just browsing through your portfolio again and spotted this remark in a reply you made above: “It’s an old painting that I revamped.” That’s a great reason for not throwing things away. We are all growing all the time and learning new techniques or angles on life. Often, when returning to an old and possibly “failed” painting, a light bulb goes on in our heads and we think, “Now I know how I should have done this.” This may be an old revamped painting to you, Catherine, but to us it looks new and fresh :)

Thanks so much Dave..yes it’s good to keep things for a few years..just in case..
I tend to hang on to things for a very long time….hha!!
Plus the fact that this canvas was a really lovely thick one good quality and not to be wasted.. and it was crying out to be redone or revamped.

I can’t always do this..there are paintings sitting here half finished and so many – many works on paper that also need finishing ..but I can’t seem to find the time or motivation to do them all.

some however just seem to demand attention like this canvas did..and I’m so glad that it
had a loud voice..hhha!!..the result was wonderful I thought..and obviously the lady who bought this thought so too.

the response to this painting has been wonderful and amazing…thanks for that dave.
at the moment I’m at a real rest or lull..and can’t seem to do any painting
I have 2 unfinished ones here on the kitchen bench waiting to be completed ..but It just aint happening ..I did make 2 small mosaic tables though..so at least I’ve still done something .
wish I could just paint up a storm and turn out some beauty’s but I can’t seem to push it..
so you find that with your work.. that no matter how hard you try sometimes..nothing gets done.?
