The Four Elements
FOR SALE” The Four Elements “
I regard this as one of my Masterpieces
price- $ 5,000 au
Acrylic on very thin cotton duck – a stretched canvas
this one is a Huge 177cm x 91cm
It took me many months to paint – and I think it’s just beautiful one of my best!
I have some great photos in my album of how it started
and quite a few photosof the stages in between this painting went through some remarkable transformations to get to the finished stage..
. I’m proud of this painting because it was such a huge
project to me but..In the end ..the result was very pleasing… I had painted my vision and Ideas about the 4 elements…and it worked..It looked great!!
I will sell this painting because I do need the money , we all want to make a living from what we do best..don’t we..? we have to survive in what way we can and I can’t hang onto all of my paintings forever…I can hang onto some though.
If you are interested in this painting..the best and safest way is me to take it off the wooden stretcher and then you have to get it restretched at your end.
it’s in good condition , there is an indentation in the painting at one end of the canvas..
but this can be fixed in the restretching. I have just had a proffessional artist tell me that the indentation can be easily fixed by wetting the back of the canvas..it’s a very superficial problem. The painting itself is perfect and undamaged with no paint missing at all from this canvas.
it’s a magnificent painting even if I say so myself…

This is brilliant Catherine…and it’s for sale this time…great…your work is really like the Bloomsbury group.
catherine walker replied
Thanks janis..I’ll have to look up the Bloomsbury group..I thought you said my work was like the the Omega group….??
ha!!!
I’m betting they are one and the same or related somehow..?
I’ve never heard of them.. but I will look them up as soon as I can.
thanks again!
Janis Zroback
The Bloomsbury Group was made up of a group of artists, writers and musicians who were also friends during the early part of the last century.. the group initially consisted of the novelists and essayists Virginia Woolf, E. M. Forster, and Mary MacCarthy, the biographer and essayist Lytton Strachey, the economist John Maynard Keynes, the painters Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell, and Roger Fry, and the critics of literature, art, and politics, Strachey, Fry, Desmond MacCarthy, Clive Bell, and Leonard Woolf….a very learned group of people.
The Omega workshop was an artist run workshop by Virginia and Vanessa….but many of their artist friends did paintings in a similar style and added paintings to the studio walls etc….

The great Millais (one of my favourite artists) would have been proud to have painted this. Here is a picture he did of stained glass
Yes, I know you’ve probably not heard of him, but I’m reminding you that we are all part of a proud tradition of artists that goes back centuries. If I had painted this picture (yours) I wouldn’t want to sell it either. You are a really good artist Catherine and I’m glad I put you on my Watchlist. Keep up the good work. By the way .. you didn’t need to tell us this is a beautiful painting … it is obvious :)
catherine walker replied
Hi dave..well that’s one kind comment..thanks so much I appreciate it wholeheartedly..and that painting you showed me..wow!! now that’s a masterful painter and a grande painting ..it blows me away how some people are so talented!
!
glad you like mine too!!
BLYTHART
Although I don’t think you will recognise this as a compliment, I see a lot of European influence in your paintings, as opposed to Australian. As you know I live on the continent of Europe I am sure you’ll realise I am complimenting you. Oops … I’ve nothing against Australian art … just making an observation.
catherine walker replied
Interesting.. You know what this could be
recently an artist commented that some of my work was like indian or arabic work ..now this IS really an Interesting observation..because
On my mothers side of the family they were all lebanese..they lived in a tiny house in Adelaide after migrating to australia from lebanon..most of my mums 10 brothers and sisters were born in australia..but they all spoke lebanese and the home culture was all lebanon..it was so wonderful and fascinating as a child to go and be amongst them.. they were quite poor but they justy made do with what they had..and all very religious ..catholics….with their holy pictures and small nick nacks from lebanon ..they were colourful , open , and very hospitable people and some were like prophets..hha!! and food was the biggie in their home..everything was centred around food..so that was an early childhood influence..On my fathers side he was an only child..and his mum was very victorian in her ways an attitude.. silver tea services and fine table linen etc etc though she was raised in New zealand my gran on dads side had parents who had come from a european background hawick in scotland and county cork in Ireland..so I guess I really do have the best of east meets west coming through in my art.
thanks..it was a good observation ..though there is definitely some middle eastern in my work. it’s coming through very subtle ..but sure.
thanks again
xxxooo
BLYTHART
P.S. I am actually so impressed by this picture I am going to tell some of my friends to look at it.
catherine walker replied
good on you ..tell em…hhha!!!
I’m glad about that ..and maybe if I eventually sell it (because I sure need the money) ..I will cry it’s that lovely..!!
..but you never know..it wil probablyl go to a good home and they will love it like me..and I will just have to do another 4 elements theme..only the next one will be very different from this..this one can never be repeated..ever..there are just too many subtle dances of colour and brushstrokes..not even a good copier could copy it…hha!!
well that’s blowing my own trumpet isn’t it…
laughing a lot here !!

Firedrake
A beautiful piece! LOVE those fish.
catherine walker replied
Thanks firedrake..much appreciated that you like this one..
BLYTHART
I only compliment when I can place my hand on my heart and say I mean it … and this is a beautiful painting you’ve done.
catherine walker replied
Thanks dave..that’s so nice..I appreciate that ..sometimes
we paint and paint for many years and a nasty thought comes up like.. “what’s it all for”
“why am I doing all this” what’s the purpose..??
..and then we get another insight..and we just know that it’s all pretty much beyond just our earthly egos..it’s all just coming from spirit.. we can’t help ourselves..we have to paint..!!!..even if no-one else sees it..and we just have to go on being creative.. it’s an inner urge..that never seems to go away..
then we find people or places like R/B ..and people let you know that your work is good..and that yes it’s all worth it..even if you never sold all that many over the years ..you just keep doing what your spirit wants you do ..and leave the rest to god..
I’m proud of this one..it has a load of energy and spirit..it’s almost like a holy painting .
thanks again
xxxooo
BLYTHART
Have you seen Firedrake’s art? Kaitlin is a great artist.
catherine walker replied
Hi ..not yet but I will..later OK
xxxooo
BLYTHART
I agree 100% with what you just wrote: “sometimes we paint and paint for many years and a nasty thought comes up like.. “what’s it all for” “why am I doing all this” what’s the purpose..?? ..and then we get another insight..and we just know that it’s all pretty much beyond just our earthly egos..it’s all just coming from spirit.. we can’t help ourselves..we have to paint..!!!” I feel that way often myself.
catherine walker replied
Yes..I think all creative people think this way at times well the ones I’ve met about 1/2 dozen of them feel the same way….but then again ..I guess anyone who works on anything might think the same way..at least we know we picked a job that will never get boring though .. and I’ll have to remember that ..
maybe god gave us this and it’s more of a PRIVILEGE ..to paint
we just can’t recognize that yet..
maybe we are the very lucky ones..maybe we don’t get much money ..but at least we don’t have that boring sort of job that a lot of people have to put up with in this world. ..
maybe we are the lucky and the blessed ones..and we should remember and use that to the best of our ability.
I have a lot of maybe’s don’t I
xxxooo
BLYTHART
I agree with Janis … the Bloomsbury Group are good. I have a book about them I keep meaning to read.
catherine walker replied
HHmmm..I’ll have to find out about them..I promised janis I would too..
but I bet I won’t see much of a similarity with my work. ..I’ll have to check them out.
helene ruiz
perfect!
catherine walker replied
Thanks so much helene..nice of you to drop in ..I appreciate your comments and so glad you like this one..!!
BLYTHART
Maybe you do think a lot of maybes … maybe :)
BLYTHART
I would be interested to see the stages this went through. I like all your work, but this very probably is your masterpiece.
catherine walker replied
It really IS very Interesting dave..and I want to put the pics in here
but they are photos..so I’ll have to get a friend to scan them in and then put them here from there..
Is there any other way to put them in here from photos that I have of this and the different stages that it went through because this changed so much ..and there is a completely different colour under this..the same painting but all pastel shades..until it turned into this version..I can’t wait to show you …I amaze myself sometimes..hha!!!! yolu know under here is a man and a woman
and they are embracing ..it was right in the middle..but I scrubbed that part..it’s still in the photos ..so as soon as I can get them here I will.
thanks
BLYTHART
You could always email me them. I bet you never read my Acceptance article.
catherine walker replied
Hi dave..they are photos..how can I email them ..I have to scan them first…and I’m asking a friend to help me do this..It’s so Interesting looking back and seeing how this painting changed so much ..from the beginning of it to the finished one .
BLYTHART
sorry – I thought you had a scanner. To include them with the text of a Journal entry you could upload them via a program like Photobucket. I’d love to see them though.
catherine walker
Hi dave..my son does have a scanner..but he won’t do this for me..
but a friend will do this for me within the next few weeks..
I’m glad you want to see them..and I can’t wait to get them ready .
.she said scanning takes a while to do each photo though ..?
I don’t know enough about it.
I have quite a few pics here that need scanning in.

thank you for sharing your art in progress, really enjoyed looking at the diff. stages of it and the final artwork is a masterpiece…original and unique work…..fabulous.
catherine walker replied
so glad you liked it ..thanks so much for taking the time to see this ..wish I could have had all the stages recorded..so I could see every step I took.. but that’s impossible unless someone is ready with a camera 24 hours a day..still it was enough to get an idea on what a big project it was for me and on some of the changes.
thanks again .. and much appreciated!!!

Wow….
This is amazing, and I love the fact that you have photos of various stages it went through. Fascinating to see you at work on this one, its truly fabulous and well worth all that effort!
I haven’t ever attempted anything really so big and complex! I’m working on a 5’ x 3.5’ at the moment of a tree, but there is nowhere near as much detail…...and its STILL been over a year since I started it…..hoping to get it finished in the next few weeks.
catherine walker replied
Thanks so much ..I appreciate those words..
it was a real effort this one..but like you said..all worth it in the end..
You would be able to do a fantastic big painting I’m sure..
when you can ..give it a try..NO fear remember ..just see what emerges..I love your beautiful scenes and cats and can imagine either of those on a huge canvas..

all your art has such innocence about it, rouseau, like to me, iloved his sweetness too, i guess you know of him? that is if i have spelled it right all i can spell in names is smith or jones haha, keep the art coming cus it feeds yah n ustoo
catherine walker replied
Thanks so much walt..very kind of you to say.
I went to the web and looked up rosseau again..yes he was the one that I loved all those years ago when I was at high school
I adored his work and I remembered right.. that he only did about 50 paintings..wow! after looking at them again..his paintings are just magnificent..and they said that he was just an amatuer artist ..but with such a proffessional look to his work he became a master in a lot of artists eyes and a lot of great painters loved his work..you never can tell with sheer talent like his..I think I liked everything about his painting.everything!
There were a few artists in my youth who could make me feel that way..here is my short list of artists I loved and was shown their work.
my father was the one that showed me some books on these artists..so I guess I can thank him for some of my inspiration as a young girl. .
Albert namitjira (because my father settled in batchelor ,darwin and there was a great aboriginal cultural happening in the top end of australia around that time..albert was an aboriginal artist who painted with the soul of his heritage but was also influenced by western artists paintings..he was great..look him up on the web OK.
my father did a good thing by letting me know about him.
then there was hans heysen he was an amazing german artist living in australia..and I don’t think I ever saw gum trees painted so wonderfully..he was a truly gifted artist..and I should go and look him up again…so I don’t forget how great he was
“masters of the japanese print” a book from my high school library..which was all about the paintings of the great japanese painters and printers ancient ..14th and 16th century etc
..soooo wonderful I could scare refrain from being so awed by this book and the drawings and paintings.!!
I could never get over the beauty of the line work by the japanese masters .
Gaugain (spelt wrong)..I just loved what he painted and how he painted so well so beautifully..and the colours..wow! ..I loved his whole life story ..though sad..he certainly pushed the boudaries of his life.
and strangely ..I just read that rosseau and gaugin knew each other and had a lot in common..wow!!
so there is a real connection going on here with the artists that astounded me.. some of them link up in some way.
will speak more of this later OK
thanks again ..much appreciated!
madvlad
wow kat, that is out of sight! you taking time to see an artist who reminds me of your art and energy too , no your not just like him, only you do have has love and feelings too, or atlest, thats how i feel, he was a very hunble man, and loved art. for art s sake, yes he was knwn by the artists of his day,and he was respected too,, i too had a huge art book collection but left it behind in ala, when i came here, and it gone now, but itok now we have a yuotube and can see art anytime we want or go to search too and put in the name of any artist who is known wech, even io am on search, which i did not know until an artist pal told me of it?- yes loooking at art is so important- it makes you breath hard and fast, and want to get going on ytour own art-
gauganwas a wild man he gave it all up for art- his family etc all- but he seemed to be miserabe too , but oh, well he did leave us all-magicial art to see and love- i have seen his art in different art museums of this country in my travels- i loved the norton simon museum of art, in pasadena calif- i have been there over 50 times while i lived in so calif-also the L.A. museum of art is soo great too- i met mr norton simon before he died-back in the early 80,s-we had a nice talk about his collection-you? know vangogh was influnced by the japaneese prints that used to come in shipments of china plates? most only se his artbut if you read his letters. you realy know how brilent he was- spoke 5 ?langues wow! all i know is two-well glad you see my seeing your art being in the same feeling of the gentle french artist!-me and you can relate toi himand his love-have a good day there here it is 6;20pm time ot see a movie if i,m up to it?take care of you!! god bless!catherine walker
beautiful post ..thanks walt.
oh yes.. it’s so good to see that we liked some of the same artists..
who wouldn’t or couldn’t love them I wonder..?
and yes I’m struck dumb.. in awe.. those artists make me hold my breath for a few moments..time stops still in the magic of their great work. !
..and I’ve never even seen any of these masters works in art galleries or museums.. only in some books and not many books at that
so It must have been wonderful for you…to see them up close..it would have been something wonderful to remember
another thing ..I noticed is
I think that I liked rosseau and gaugan because they had that sort of design or pattern to their work..some people called ot decorative art..but to me it was much more than.. much more
they were masters at painting ..the work had both nature and spirit entwined..dream like yet real.. perfect colours and paintings that had a perfect balance of ” everything”
I guess I’m trying to say that to me that roseauu and gaugan had the most perfect compositions and perfect colours.. and their work seemed to have a certain styalized for want of a better word) look..a bit like egyptian .. don’t you think so..?
maybe that’s what really appeals to me about their work..there’s an ancient egyptian quality to it
and the ancient egyptian art found in pyramids and temples has such mastery with their line work. I wonder now..if gaugain and roseauu were influenced by the egyptian art..?...I’d better get back and study. it’s so Interesting.
also isn’t that great about the japanese print masters..
“quote”
vangogh was influnced by the japaneese prints that used to come in shipments of china plates? most only se his art but if you read his letters. you realy know how brilent he was- spoke 5 ?langues wow! all i know is two-well glad you see my seeing your art being in the same feeling of the gentle french artist!-me and you can relate toi himand his love-have a good day .
Thanks for that ..very Interesting !
and I’m so glad we can relate to those artists.
yes they seemed to have a lot of love for their creations.
that’s good to spot that walt…
we can follow the masters in our love for our creatuons and imbue them with that loving energy..for sure! we might never get to their height ..but we can sure emulate the beautiful energy that they both put out there and also managed to trap that same energy in their paintings
an energy that should last forever.

Catherine,
I’ve been taking the time to look at your work (hardly finished yet) and reading not only your profile (which I’ll B-mail you on) but also many of your replies to comments. You remove any guilt I have about writing long replies! lol ;
))))))This particular work IS one of your ‘master pieces’, but I have to look at more to make up my mind whether ‘your BEST!’ ;
So interesting that the artists commenting on your work are also ones I’m drawn to as well. Also your conversation about artistic influences are also reflective of my own influences. Ah, I’m so looking forward to seeing and hearing more from you.
catherine walker replied 13 days ago
That’s so nice of you james..thankyou!!..what a lovely thing to say and I’m so glad your’e enjoying looking through my gallery..
I guess I thought that this one was a beauty because it had so many layers ..layer over layer and took a long time to finish also when I look at this painting up close now it has so many colours all knitted together that I even suprise myself with it ..but it might not be the best..what is the best anyway..I’ve done small paintings that I like just as much ..so you’re right about that ..
maybe this one is my biggest project/painting and it took so long to finish and that the colours were so wonderful in the end that I call it one of my masterpeices..hha!!..I’m not really sure
but anyway .I really appreciate your kindness I’m grateful that you took time to come in here and comment .
as for my long replies..glad you do the same sometimes..I can be long winded..I can hold my breath and talk and talk..don’t get me going ..hhah!!
other times though ..I’m as quiet as a mouse…and sometimes don’t want to talk for days…I especially don’t like to talk when I paint..I find it too hard to talk and paint together.

Just let me add, after looking again… this is a master piece, painted by an incredibly talented and soul filled artist.
