Chapter 18- Watching

Tristan had walked out of the room, leaving me there to watch him go. Helpless and not sure what to do, I stood in the large, empty and cold room. I had stopped crying, but felt the same as I did when I was. The high heels, that the girl had stuffed my feet in, started to hurt.

I took a deep breath in and sighed it out. “Okay.” I whispered and walked to the door, peering back in the room making sure I was certain I wanted to leave it. I cautiously walked through the eerie hallway and made my way into the great room. I looked around for life, but everything was deathly still. Too still.

I started to feel the drowsiness seep into my brain and body, but I tried to ignore it. Instead I took off the shoes and tossed them at the abnormally large, wooden door, which made a loud clunk. I waited a minute and nobody came. Not even a foot fall on the floors above me.

This could be my chance, I thought to myself. I may not know where or which way to go. Or even how long, but I’d rather die than be married to this schitzo freak. I softly walked over to the nearby window with dark, heavy drapes and peered out of them. No one was there. It can’t possibly be this easy. There was a dirt path that led from the Grim Reaper’s house and down a hill.

I looked behind me as I shut the drape. No one was behind me. It was like no one was here. I just shook my head. It was like the time that I snuck out, almost got arrested, came back and mom was still sound asleep like she was when I left. It amazes me.

I grabbed up my shoes silently and quietly opened the door, as lightly as I could. Once the space was big enough for me to fit, I snuck through it. Watching both from the inside and the out, in case of any life forms coming after me. When the door was closed, the only thing behind me was a dust cloud or at least it felt like it.

I went from running on the hard, foot throbbing gravel to cool, moist, earth packed soil. Tire prints were leading my way. I knew they were new by the thickness. It doesn’t take a genius. Then I heard a noise. Scraping old metal came from in front of me. I ran towards it, cautiously…Or until I found out what it was.

Heart throbbing painfully with every moment the space between the gate got closer to reaching its destination, I fought tooth and nail to push myself closer. It was getting to be one foot away when I finally started to reach it and sucking in, I jumped through it.

“Shit!” I screamed in a whisper. My dress had caught on the end of it and it closed tightly together. Jumping and running was coming from where I just left and was coming at full speed. “Oh, for fuck’s SAKE!” I grabbed a hold of my dress and pulled, yanked, everything, but that dress did not want to let loose. My breathing started coming faster. I put one leg on the pillar that the gate was closed on and put my other leg on the fence, pulling with my eyes closed and it finally ripped and tore all the way down. I fell flat on my back and lost my breath. I breathed in and got up, running full force after the tire tracks in the mud. Yelling…No, Roaring came from where the gate was, but I refused to look back.

It took a very long time to reach pavement, but I got there. I almost fell to my knees trying to catch my breath. The nice, massaging soil had turned to gravel again, making my feet sting. Ants crawled not far from me, unaware of what was happening. The tire tracks stopped at the pavement, it was cold and windy and my dress wasn’t helping.

I waited for a few moments, catching my breath and looking around. A sound of a car was coming from my left side and sounded like it was slowing down.

“Son of a bitch.” I said under my breath and got up quickly to hide behind an abnormally shaped tree, having to jump over the ant hill. A large, white van came into view around the corner. It slowly turned into the driveway. I looked harder at who was driving and my pulse sped back up. “Oh my GOD!” I ran from my hiding place and towards the van, which slammed on breaks.

Sam jumped from the van and was running towards me. I flew into his arms, wrapping mine around his neck and burying my head into his shoulder. He had one arm around my head and the other around my waist, then pushed me away.

“Don’t you EVER do something that stupid!” He yelled and I blinked. He grabbed my face and kissed my cheek and my lips.

“No. Don’t even. I saved your sorry asses.” I said through his lips. He looked at me like he was going to say something, but his eyes changed. He took my hand and pulled me towards the van. He walked through the ant hill and I jumped across it, trying to run away from the ants.

Aiden was making his way towards the back to let me have the passenger seat. I climbed in it as Sam was slamming his door. A few hellos from the boys came from the back and I looked behind me. A door between Sam and my seat was open, revealing five perfectly healed teenage guys with wide eyes. All except for Casey who was slightly green.

“Shit,” Sam muttered and I looked as he slammed the van into reverse, sending gravel flying when he floored it. Two. Three…Four bodies came running at full speed towards us. One was the girl who made me look hot. The slow one was Nick. I fought back the urge to yell out the window that he was the world’s biggest moron. The other two were extremely tall men and looked identical. Both had sandy, blonde hair, threatening black eyes and had a nice suit on. Every one of them were showing their fangs except for Nick.

Sam slung the van into drive, making the guys in the back fly into each other as the van screeched its way around the curve. Casey grabbed his mouth and closed his eyes. Then, he swallowed.

“Ehhh..” He shuddered. I looked out in the side view mirror. Nick had stopped and was trying to catch his breath, the girl and the two men were gaining up on us, but she was falling behind. The two men were closer up and looked like they were about to leap onto the van.

“Sam,” I said and Sam swung the van from the left to the right, making it more difficult for them to jump on. I clung onto his seat and mine. Then Sam had it floored as the van started going down a hill. Like mountain roads, the road curved in and went out of view as it curved back around like an “S”.

The vampires went out of view in minutes, almost seconds. Then, Casey hurled.

“Aw, SICK, homes!” Jeffri yelled. I gagged and rolled down the window, sticking my head out like a dog. Derrick and Jeffri were making their way up to where me and Sam sat. Jared was helping Casey and Aiden stared out the back window, watching. When the car lurched around the corner, Aiden looked back at me. I gave him a small smile with sympathy in my eyes and he returned the smile.

I turned back to Sam. “I though vampires were supposed to be fast.”

“They are, the sun makes them weak.” Aiden replied. Sam looked in his rear view mirror. Sam had a look. I looked back at Aiden. He had a look. Like they were about to leap out at each other. Sam looked at me and I looked away quickly and moved my head slowly.

“I wake up this morning, no one was here. NO ONE!” Vyncent yelled. Then he looked over at Aiden. “And I know what you gave me was not Advil or what ever it was.”

“Should have been Midol..” Aiden grumbled next to me. I giggled. Vyncent looked at me then Sam.

“And where the hell is Nick?” No one said anything. “What have you bunch done now? I have had UADH leaders on my case about your little accident or accident-S, you should say.” Vyncent landed back in the chair at his desk. He put his hands over his face and slid them down slowly, making the circles under his eyes start to show.

“Okay, the first one wasn’t our fault. That was all-” Derrick started, coming back from helping Casey puke his guts in the bathroom.

“I personally don’t care who’s fault it was. All I care about is why everything looked either out of place, missing or smashed to pieces!” Vyncent yelled. I looked over at Sam who looked like he could pass out any minute and start snoring.

“Well. If you listen, you might find out what happened to the holy terror.” Aiden replied, sitting down in one of the chairs. Everyone else remained standing. Vyncent blinked at him, looking ready to cut the chandelier’s cord off over Aiden’s head. Aiden smiled cheerfully at him.

“Your story better be worth the little time I have left in this world.”

“Oh, it is. Are you excited? I’m excited.” Aiden said, looking back at Sam, who looked as if he were saying, “Shut up”.

Sam took a breath and looked back at Vyncent. “Nick’s working for Tristan, who ordered Nick to capture Terrie. I woke up from the thunder and…” Sam continued explaining the story. Everybody started to fall into place. Derrick went to check on Casey, Jeffri went to look at his room or something like that, Jared went to bed, while Sam and I found seats near Aiden.

“And that’s it!” Aiden exclaimed after Sam finished. Vyncent looked speechless.

“Oh, good God…Up in heaven.” Vyncent replied, rubbing his temples. I stared at Sam. I didn’t know he was in a room close to me when I was with those creatures back at Tristan’s. Vyncent looked back at Sam, then to Aiden and then to me. “What a nightmare.”

“It was.” Aiden said, looking accomplished.

“Be quiet. You’re not the one who’s going to be blamed for this.” Vyncent growled.

“Those old buzzards need to die anyway.” Aiden snorted.

“Aiden..” Sam looked at Aiden with a stern look and looked back at Vyncent with a look that screamed, “I just want to get the hell out of here.” Sam ran a hand through his hair. “I tried. I really did. All I wanted by the end of the day was to get everyone out of there. They drugged Casey so bad that he could barely breathe without wanting to throw up. We all got the crap beaten out of us. Personally, I’m so happy to be home.”

Vyncent looked at him, apologizing with his eyes, then looked at me. “Your mother will be here tomorrow, if the news hasn’t spread to her yet. If it has, she’ll be here in fifteen minutes.” He sighed. “Go on, go take naps and,” he looked at Aiden, sternly. “eat.”

Obediently, we left in a line with Sam leading. I looked back at Vyncent.

“How am I related to Saint George?” I asked.

“I’ll tell you later after I try to get everything cleared and prepared for what Tristan has in store for us.” Vyncent replied, looking up at me. Aiden and Sam waited at the door, Aiden’s hand ready to close it.

I nodded at Vyncent and walked through the doorway, Sam behind me and Aiden last. Aiden shut the door behind him just as Sam turned and looked at me.

“I have to go to bed. I have to.” He muttered.

I nodded. “Okay.” Sam looked over my shoulder at Aiden with warning signs going off in his eyes then looked back at me and kissed me softly on the lips. Show off.

Sam backed up two steps and walked away up the stairs. I looked back at Aiden in the empty dining room, who was preoccupying himself with forcing open a bag of salt and vinegar chips, using too much force. Suddenly, a shower of chips were raining down in every direction, followed by the smell of vinegar with a layer of salt. He looked at the ground for a minute and then at me.

“Do you know how much I…” Aiden started as he pointed a finger at me and bit his bottom lip, his eyes hid the fire behind them. I breathed in the smell of the vinegar fumes that burned my nose and throat.

“No, what ever it is, I probably don’t know.” I replied, smoothly, shaking my head.

“What were you thinking, Terrie? I mean seriously. What was going through your mind?” Aiden asked, picking up chips. I wasn’t sure if he was actually talking to me or himself. “Sam almost had a heart attack.”

“You mean, you almost had a heart attack.” I replied, not purposefully meaning to say it.

He looked at me, still bent over. He breathed in and plopped on the ground, crunching of chips came from underneath him. Aiden looked at me like he was five and I hurt his feelings. I felt like falling down and hugging him. Instead I stood still.

“I’m sorry.” He murmured.

“About what?” I asked, sitting down as well, except sweeping the chips away with my hands.

“Everything… From leaving you, to everything. I’m just sorry.” He put his head down and fiddled with a few chips on the floor, putting them in the shape of a smiley face. I scooted over to him hugged him from the side.

“It’s not your fault.” He looked over at me, my head on his shoulder.

“Terrie, just to let you know, I like you.” Blunt yet obvious. Nice.

“Yeah…I know.” I replied, letting go.

“That obvious?” He asked, watching me.

“Well, especially now, since Sam is acting like kissing me on the lips is marking his territory.” Aiden snorted. “Can I ask you something?”

“Psh.. Yeah.”

“When you said Tristan was your brother, does that make you half vampire, too?”

“A little, yeah.”

“You don’t act like it, though. Like, you don’t have any characteristics of a vampire.”

“Well, think of it as I drink my own Kool-Aid. He drinks blood and was never blessed by the UADH. Half vampires aren’t exactly what everyone thinks, let alone full blooded vampires. Me and Tristan…Well, I was blessed by UADH at eleven. He was blessed by the UAV. United Association of Vampires. Original, I know.” Aiden was watching every move I made.

“First off, why did you get blessed by the UADH?”

“Sam didn’t tell you? If your going to be a part of the UADH and your half blooded, you have to be blessed. He probably didn’t mention it because he’s full blooded, but.. In order for the powers to full on work, you gotta be blessed to make them work their magic. Like you, for instance.” Pick on the red head. “I bet you’ve never been able to run like we can or make yourself heal, have you?” I shook my head. “It’s like a computer, you have the right system requirements, but you need the game to play. It makes getting into athletics easier. It’s kind of nice.”

“So why did he get the blessings from the UAV? Why didn’t he get the UADH to do it?” I asked, putting the chip down that I had been playing with. Aiden looked down at his chip face.

“Because he’s stupid and ran away when he turned ten.” Aiden looked back at me with a smirk that made him look even cuter.

“What do they do, the UAV?” I asked.

“Well think of it as the better of the evil.” He looked away and picked up two chips, one looked more pointed. “You have the UADH,” He said, looking back at me and pointing out the rounder chip. “then you have the UAV.” He set the chip down and picked up the pointed one and looked at it, his face unreadable. Aiden looked back at me with the chip still in his hand. “The UADH is all about helping people out to make their lives more human like, which of course makes vampire’s lives.. Well worthless. The UAV had formed around the 1900’s. Protecting vampires and crazy things like that. Well,” He put the chip down. “ that didn’t float UADH’s boat and so they use vampires against vampires. They announced things about how a vampire’s life would be more efficient and better than what the UAV had in store. You would think they wouldn’t go for it, but.. they did.

“Vampires were starting to go for the UADH and others stuck around with UAV. Anyway, the main point is, UADH recruited vampires by creating a, I guess you could say, spell. A spell that almost makes vampires like humans or demon hunters. Helps you fit in. Like me. Me sitting here in front of you has no effect on me like it should. I’m supposed to be having the urge to suck the ever loving blood out of your veins right now, but I personally couldn’t care less. Yet, I still have my main abilities, such as running, jumping, noticing things, able to see better in the dark than the light. Things like that. If I wanted to, I could pull out my fangs, but there’s no need.

“The UAV on the other hand was relatively pissed. They stood on their ground saying that the spell was a disgrace and that anyone who joined the UADH should be banished from civilization all together. So, vampires are split. If a kid who was born into a family of crazy vampires who were all for UAV, but he wanted to be apart of the UADH, he’s screwed. That was Tristan except it was more like he was for UAV and we were for UADH. So, the night before his blessing, he ran away. And I mean, he ran so far away, that there was no use even trying to find him.” Aiden began playing with the rest of the chips on the floor.

“What does the UAV do…” I repeated, smiling.

“Oh, ha. Yeah. They form groups like the UADH. I don’t want to talk about it anymore.” He started to get up, avoiding anything to do with the UAV.

“Oh.. Okay.” I started getting up, too.

“You know, all he had to do was talk about it to me. I’m two years younger than him and tried to do everything to be a cool ass brother like he was to me. We all fucking knew what he would turn out being. It’s just ridiculous.” I watched, still in the sitting position, as he walked around the room, staring at the ground. Aiden looked back at me and laughed crazily. “This was our first time talking to each other since I was.. nine years old. What a reunion, huh?” He sat down on a nearby chair.

“Now, look.” I got up completely and walked over to him, getting on my knees and looking up at him. He had his face covered with his hands, elbows resting on his knees. “It’s not your fault, you know.” He pulled his hands down a little to show his eyes. They were beautiful, the iris’s were a dark but light brown, if that can even be imagined. And they were looking directly into mine.

“I wish it was. In a way, I think I’d feel better.” He replied through his hands. I smiled.

“That makes no sense.” He laughed.

“I know.” He slowly stopped laughing and it went quiet, but he didn’t look away from me.

“What?” I asked, still with a smirk. Suddenly, he put his hand on the back of my neck and forcing his lips onto mine. I slowly closed my eyes, taking in everything. Time seemed to slow down, unable to catch my breath with my heart beating rapidly. Then I realized what was happening. I jumped back a foot, landing on my butt then suddenly someone cleared their throat behind me. Oh shit, I said in my head and closed my eyes.

“Sam.” Aiden muttered.
