Humming Bird Hawk moth at Lavender
Taken near Bergerac in France on this years tour of friends and relatives . One lavender bush covered with these and other varieties plus butterflies and even a Saw Fly .
Taken with Canon 40D , short extension tube , 100-400 IS canon zoom @ 500 iso plus a little fill in flash to give some substance to the wings .

A Vision Of Flight Photography , Butterflies, Skippers, Moths, & Other Winged Insects (2 a Day) and Insects, Bugs and Creepy Crawlies (2 A Day)

They are supposed to be quite rare , so I was told .You did well to capture it as they move very fast, a great shot .

Patience mainly and a large number of failures !! Look at any lavender bushes when you visit . They all seem to like it and keep coming back . Good luck on your holiday .

Same for me until this trip . The same bush had two varieties of Bee hawk moths also which you will see later when processed .
